I am really getting down in the dumps watching this team. Tonight's game should have been a 30 point blowout. This game will do nothing to affect our standing. I really expect to be out of the top 10 next week.

Norm, I feel the same way you do. This is not going to be a fun team to watch this year in my opinion. I just do not think our talent is as good as it was advertised. PJ Washington has shown little to no improvement in his game over last year this early in the season and I am just not that impressed with the game of Travis Reid. This team appear to be lost on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor and their ball handling and passing is extremely weak. Very poor defensive team for a Cal coached group. Hopefully we will see a lot of improvement as the season goes on but from what I have seen through the two exhibition games and two regular season games, I think we will have several losses this season and just don't see final four talent on this team.

I agree Norm. Been a long time sine I watched a UK team with less enthusiasm. I still think we will be in the top 10 because we are UK Not because we deserve the ranking.
SCWC, I agree about Reid. IMO, he is just not athletic enough to be a real force. After saying that, you can be pretty sure he will be the greatest player in college basketball. I still have hopes that PJ will hit his stride. For some unknown reason he remains my favorite.

A lot of what has been said is easy to agree with. I just don't like what I've seen. So far Cal is still trying to determine who the starters are and who will be coming off the bench first. But along with all this he must determine who can play well with who.
They are listening to him and trying to move the ball fast. Maybe too fast for the skills they have right now. Like was said, they are weak in ball handling as last night proved. Way too many turnovers.
Reid is trying to go up with the ball every time he gets it and his shooting is not that great. Matter of fact, none of them are shooting well yet. After 2 games Herro's accuracy is way off. If he doesn't snap out of his funk he could be the biggest flop ever, after being compared to Chapman.
SIU did have a good shooting team for most of the game and we didn't. That is where the difference comes in during the early parts of the game. We also get lost on the drives and our expected inside defense hasn't been able to stop them
My expectations are things will settle into place after several more games. Last night I think we seen who may be the starters after some more experimenting. I like Richards, Montgomery, Johnson, Quickly and Green/Herro.
Richards is the best one to protect the board and rebound. Montgomery will be the inside/outside threat with his shooting. Johnson is the only possible draft pick at this time with his all around game. Quickly looks more like a PG than anyone else at this time, and he can shoot. Green and Herro are our 3 point shooters and whoever is hitting should be on the floor.
After ND, VMI and Winthrop, if we aren't starting to settle in as a team, I'll start wondering where we will finish also. Remember, last years team wasn't that good at the start and never did reach where we thought they should??? [ 11-10-2018, 08:50 AM: Message edited by: Bama Cat ]

I agree Norm, There are times when I just think Cal micro manages everything instead of letting the players do the things that they are good at. I just think it's odd to have top 25 recruits and struggle with the small schools. Duke, Kansas doesn't perform that that. Coach K just stares at the court and just watches his players go.

I guess I'm trying to make a silk purse out of a cow's ear but SIU is an experienced very good mid major.

We should be used to this by now. Cal is very deliberate, very slow in rolling out both offense and defense to his teams. We always look out of synch and frankly not very good in November (folks, it is ONLY November 10th!). And Cal is playing some decent under-the-radar teams, a good move to help this team learn against seasoned competition.
It is only in January, after the unlimited practice time over Christmas break, that we get a good look at what this team is capable of doing. It has always been so... although admittedly, some teams struggled less than this one. But I still think we have some good players that can take us far into the tournament, once they come together and grasp the full offense and defense that Cal will teach.
The non-conference schedule is really tough, and the SEC has really upped the level of basketball across the conference. We will take some losses this year -- my guess is 6-8 losses. But this team could still be amazing. Just give 'em a couple of months.

A lot of people were disappointed in Herro's performance in the SI game but that's just one game and I think he will be fine.

I think they'll all be fine. We're a spoiled fan base. We only have to go back 12-15 short years to see what we had before.
