Kentucky’s defensive results were a mixed bag in its 86-64 win over IUP on Friday night, but that’s not surprising for a young team in the preseason. The Wildcats held IUP to 38 percent from the field and 33 percent from behind the 3-point line, but there were several defensive lapses.
“We fouled three times and gave them six points,” Kentucky coach John Calipari said. “One on a jump shooter. One 96 feet from the basket. And another one we grabbed the guy on a back-cut. You’re just giving them points when they were struggling to score. We’re understanding that you’re not trying to stop them from scoring. You’re trying to make it difficult so they make a tough shot if they make one and we rebound and go. We’re still learning.”
Kentucky ultimately held the Crimson Hawks to 64 points and held them scoreless for close to seven minutes during one stretch in the first half. But after getting a 17-point lead, the Wildcats’ defense faded some. The Crimson Hawks got the lead down to six late in the first half and down to five points in the second half. Kentucky eventually cruised to the finish line.
