The 2017 version of the Kentucky Wildcats’ Blue-White basketball game will take place this Friday in Rupp Arena at 7 p.m.. While the fan-base gets their formal introduction to the team at Big Blue Madness, the Blue-White game is the first taste they will get of actual basketball.
The point guard battle. - We will likely see Quade Green and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander going head-to-head on Friday. It will interesting to see the strengths of each and how they run the offense in their own ways.
Shooting. - We know Kevin Knox and Jemarl Baker can shoot. What about everyone else? Is this a team that can shoot the opposition out of a zone, or are they vulnerable on the perimeter?
The bigs. - I think we know P.J. Washington is a force to be reckoned with. But is Nick Richards ready? Has Sacha Killeya-Jones made strides? Will there be some depth down low, or will we be seeing more small-ball lineups this season?
Team defense. - We know this team has length, and we have seen how athletic they are. But can they play the type of team defense needed to stop a well-rounded offensive team? That may be difficult to fully assess in a split-squad game, but we should be able to see if the individual pieces can fill their role as the part of a unit.

If the three injured players don't play there will only be 1 extra player to sub in for either team. Too many pieces could be absent to really get a feel for this team. But that leaves 8 scholarship kids for the first game if none of the injured return in time for the first exhibition game.

Won’t be able to get a feel for them as a team, at this early stage. What we can do is get a peak at the “potential” of those young colts, individually, running up and down the floor.

Looks like another Cal team that has plenty of talent that should get better and better as the season goes on.

Why does Tai Wynyard not get PT? I saw him get the ball in the post. He took an extra 2 seconds to put up a shot. That is an eternity. He has been here longer than anybody.

Hey, Boom, that is old-school post play. The greats of the past did not rush their shot. Today's game is tip-passes and lob-dunks, but a good, wide-bodied post player should let the shot develop.
I like Wynard, but I do think he is over-awed by his teammates. If he can get over that, he can be an effective producer, especially in certain match-ups.
The game had a lot of fouls, but showed some promise. Shooting was good (or defense was terrible, your choice), and 44-45% from the arc will be a big plus for this team. PJ Washington (if he can stay on the court) is a solid player, and Richards is a beast in the paint. I like Shai's game almost as much as Quade's. Knox will be the next Tayshaun Prince, both at UK and in the NBA. Didn't like the stat line for Diallo, but there is time for that to develop.
I do look for this group to gel into an outstanding team by late January/early February.

I’m an old guy. Mybearliest memories are of the 78 team. My favorite player of that team was James Lee.
I was kid then.
Now, as I got older and could understand a bit more, incouldbsee the development of the players from one year to the next.
Players that got noticeably better were Roger Hardin and Kenny Sky Walker. Hardin’s passes were spot on as he got more more experience. Kenny became automatic at a couple of shots and got them up super quick.
Winston Bennet was a guy that really progressed and got quicker with his offense.
Then you have guys that just had natural talent, like Mashburn and Mercer and Antoine Walker. They just had the moves that came natural to them.
Most of the super freshmen that Cal brings in have the natural talent. A few have to work on things.
Winyard has to work on things. Sacha isn’t as fluid as the freshmen big men. You can just see it. The freshmen are a cut above in raw ability.

Diallo is a beast. I would have him on my team any day. He and Knox are like gazelles floating to the rim. Diallo is a very key player. I don’t get why anyone would criticize that young man. I truly believe this is a team that can make a run. So what is they look rough. TRhey are freshmen. What are they suppose to look like at this point in the season?
What I saw was a boat load of talent. He has a very large roster, which means if a guy doesn’t put out the effort and do what is expected, another kid will take his place. He is two deep at every spot. If he gets the injured big man back, not even bad referees will be able to stop them.
