UL has kept paying Pitino and will until October 16, when the board meets to discuss if they will fire him or not.
I do not know the inner workings of big time coaching contracts, but what I am guessing is that UL is cutting its losses to prevent Pitino from collecting a huge windfall that was built into his contract if he is terminated in a certain way. That is why UL said he was not fired when it first was announced and Pitino's attorney sated that he had been fired.
