Sophomore center Isaac Humphries is unsure about his future at Kentucky.
He sat in the Wildcats locker room at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Thursday as UK is set to begin NCAA Tournament play, but his team’s success is contrasted against a season of personal shortcomings, as he told SEC Country.
“In my mind I thought I’d be more confident, I thought I would look more confident, I thought I would be more productive,” Humphries said. “It just hasn’t really happened. I don’t know what happened, but I had a bit of a lull there and I think it got a bit too late to come out of it completely.”
Humphries played 66 more minutes this season than he did a year ago, but his role never expanded past backing up freshman big man Bam Adebayo. He said he’s not sour about the role he’s been dealt, but rather how he’s performed in it.
“I expected a different season,” Humphries said. “I expected completely to not go this way, but that happens. I’m just trying to push through everything I can and do as much as I can when I get out there.”
And that 180-degree difference between expectation and reality has the Australian contemplating his future at Kentucky. The former 4-star prospect has been overshadowed at UK and his path to playing time might not be clear next year with a slew of McDonald’s All-Americans entering the fray.
Humphries said he’s staying positive and accepting his minutes as they come, but he’s ready to weigh his options once Kentucky’s tournament run is over.

I have a feeling we will lose him and possibly Wynyard both once the season is over. We may not have anyone returning for next season, ouch.

Well, the aussie kid may be as good as he is going to get.
Wynyard could be a great asset to just go in there an rebound and get garbage points. If he develops offensive moves or a jump shot, he could figure into the O game as well.

I still feel cal doesn't give his players much of a chance to play. They probably make a couple mistakes in practice and then coach just sits them. There is no way they're that bad. There are times were up by 20+ and he won't even play them for 2 min of mop up time. So sad.

You're spot on, Blue Hoot. It's impossible to get better and gain confidence sitting on the bench or getting yanked for not playing perfect. I just hope the way our big guys have been handled this year doesn't come back and bite us in the rear.

Humpries' game is just different from Bam's game. He has a softer touch, can shoot the ball out to 15 feet effectively, and is a pretty good passer out of the post.
Bam is just a beast down low.
Both have average hands, and neither is a good shot blocker. Both play "matador defense" when they switch onto a quicker guard.
I like Humphries' game. I think he can be a good center if the offense is structured differently. I also think that he, like many big men, need to stay in the game longer to get into the rhythm to be effective. But in the high-athleticism environment that is Kentucky basketball, a traditional, inside-out center-friendly offense is not likely. [ 03-17-2017, 09:01 PM: Message edited by: Tiptree ]

Hopefully Humphries will stay with us, I think he is a 4 year player who will help a lot next year and even more his senior year. His girlfriend, Brooke Morgan, a 6 4 volleyball star with UK will hopefully keep him happy and on campus for the duration of his career. I too feel he does not get enough minutes to get into the flow of the game and would like to see him get longer stretches of playing time. Bam says Wynward is the one that he hates going up against in practice, says he is a beast who gives him all he wants physically. [ 03-17-2017, 09:43 PM: Message edited by: SCWC ]

I feel not only Humphries but Hawkins has not been given enough time in 4 year due to All Americans trying to get to the NBA. Cal better be careful in the future or the tide could turn on him. Just saying.

I hope Cal continues doing exactly what he has been doing since the start of his time at UK...it has resulted in 4 final fours and a national championship. Not every decision he makes works out like he hopes, but in the end, his success proves that his way is the right way...his gameplan works.

If Humphries was a stock I would sell, because he is stagnant and not making any gains.
I didn't watch the whole game against NKU, but Humphries was a liability when he got out there in the first half. He was going against guy smuch shorter and got abused around the basket. He jumped early and fouled a guy who was maybe 6'7". I am not the coach, but if I were, I would play Wynyard over him, at least he would get some rebounds.
I expected much more from the 7 footer. He is the biggest disappointment of any player on the team. [ 03-18-2017, 07:26 AM: Message edited by: boomdaddy ]

If Monk was a stock would you sell? He seems pretty stagnant and has not been making many gains of late. I thought not.

We don't have many games left to watch Monk but I would sure like to know if the real Monk is the one we saw in a few games early in the year or the one we are seeing now?? He takes so many shots and some of them are so far off the mark they connect with nothing but air. I feel that he is rushing to get shots off because everyone is defending him pretty much all the time. But the rest of our stars, Fox, Briscoe and Bam are also doing that. When you are defended well you tend to rush shots.

Monk turned down an open 3-pointer last night. That's not a good sign if you ask me. That means his confidence is shaken. I'm glad the media is making a big deal out of Wichita (even though they don't impress me on paper). I think the bigger the game, the better we play.

I like Humphries, but I think if I were home, I would follow Wiltjer and go to Gonzaga. His game is tailor made for the way they play.

Humpries is what so many UK fans say they want. A four year player. If he stays 4 years he will be a contributor.

If he stays, I hope he hustles more than he did this season. If anything, he seems to have played worse than last year.
Monk is the bell cow. He is a beast. Monk is my favorite player on this team. [ 03-18-2017, 02:08 PM: Message edited by: boomdaddy ]

I thought the same thing. Now I'm wondering if he will be able to return to the player we thought was going to be the best player on the team. If we lose to Wichita State he will probably be the one most responsible

I don't see Whichita corn stalks beating the cats.
Of all the players, Briscoe getting careless with the passes and missing crib shots worries me more than any other player. I also don't want Gabriel shooting the ball at the end of a possession with the shot clock running out, when the game is close.
