From KSR: quote:
This is certainly not what I was expecting. UK just announced that Marcus Lee will remove his name from the NBA Draft…and transfer to a different school. “Marcus Lee informed us today that he is pulling his name out of the draft but has decided he is going to transfer to a school out west to be closer to his family,” head coach John Calipari said. “We talked it through together and discussed the team next season, which he said had no bearing on his decision. I also told him he was a semester away from graduating. With that said, he was still adamant that, after the combine experience, a year off and regrouping would be the best thing. As always I support my players and their decisions.” quote:
With Matthews, that makes two transfers after one season, something very unusual for Cal teams. [ 05-25-2016, 12:19 PM: Message edited by: SCWC ]

It shows they are pretty smart and want to improve their chances of playing more. A year on the sideline can only help Lee get better by the time he finishes. Like was said this is a move that wasn't anticipated. I wonder who will pick him up.

Very strange. I hate to see us lose two guys. I think Lee would have been an asset, but he must think he would not play much.

Lee may want a chance to be the "man" down low, even if he has to wait a year. I wish him the best of luck. I hope he improves his free throw shooting and develops a few offensive moves that he can count on.
Had he stayed, he would be coming off the bench, next season. He would be a valuable team mate, but still coming off the bench.

I would like to see Lee at Gonzaga along side Karnowski. That would be interesting. My guess is, though, that he ends up in Southern California somewhere.

I was pleasantly surprised at how Lee came along since his freshman year. I think he was a solid contributor for us last season, and was looking forward to him being a 4 year player at UK. I'll sure miss him next season.

In the right situation, Lee could be a major factor. His athleticism, energy, shotblocking, and enthusiasm were net pluses. And the baseline lob play is always an option.
But, he really needed a widebody to play alongside him. Somebody who could challenge other true centers in the paint, allowing Lee to provide excellent help defense and cover the weak side. Lee could cover a lot of ground effectively, and smaller, quicker players had trouble getting past him.
I also thought he got better year-by-year, and was expecting a significant contribution this year. I wish him the best; both he and Poythress were wonderful representatives of the university, even if they didn't end up wowing the NBA scouts.
I think we are getting a little spoiled here in the BBN. If a player doesn't go on to play in the NBA, he is labeled a "disappointment". That is new for UK -- we have had a lot of players that we followed for four years who never played professionally, and I don't recall ever thinking that I was 'disappointed' in them. The norm used to be a great college player might play professionally, but that wasn't expected. Now, it is "NBA or bust" at UK. What a change of expectations! I hate to see him leave. We might appear to have an abundance of skilled big men but you never know. Skal was a great example, most of us thought he would be the best thing since sliced bread but he had little impact on the team. IMO, Lee would have been nice to have as an ace in the hole.
