From KSR:

Derek Anderson did an interview with Drew Deener on ESPN 680 yesterday, and, well, he certainly had a lot to say. Anderson took shots at John Calipari, last year’s Kentucky team, and the players who decided to go pro after this season, claiming that kids today have no concept of what it’s like to play against the caliber of players he played against during his college career.

“We won against pros and we dominated. We averaged 91 points a game. How many did this team average? 75?” Anderson said of this year’s Kentucky team, which finished 38-1.

Anderson then criticized John Calipari for letting kids go pro instead of encouraging them to stay in school and develop their skills.

“If Coach Cal wanted to keep these kids and develop them, he should tell them that. He’s just running them in and out. It’s not him, it’s not just him, it’s the parents. If my son is supposed to go second round, ‘Son, you need to stay in school, get your degree in case something happens, and also finish the job. Make sure you make these people know you can actually play.’ They’re just running them out of here. Like Dakari Johnson. I hope he makes it, but he’s a 7-footer who can’t jump. What’s he going to do with no degree when he’s done in two years?”

When Deener mentioned the Harrison Twins, Anderson continued his rant.

“It’s sad to see this man. I never thought–if I was a coach, I wouldn’t allow it to happen. I would keep my players and develop them and teach them there’s a better, different way to do this.”

Anderson then criticized John Calipari’s coaching, which he says cost Kentucky the 2014 National Championship.

“Last year, when we went to the Final Four with [Julius] Randle and them, it was because of pure talent, and the reason we lost? Coaching. Why did Louisville beat [UConn] by 30? They pressured their guards. We let the kid Shabazz Napier–he walked the ball up and just shot in our face the whole night. I’m like, ‘did you not watch the tape of Louisville beating them? They pressured these guys.'”

When Deener said it sounded like Anderson wasn’t happy with how things were going at Kentucky, Anderson agreed. “It kills me. I’m tweeting people, I’m like, ‘Coach, you know you can run a lob to your seven-footer.’ Nobody can jump.”

When Deener asked if the BBN had attacked Anderson yet for his comments, Anderson said no. In fact…

“No, they agree with me. Look at them, I’ve never had problems with them. I had one guy on Facebook say, ‘Well, he’s doing pretty good, he’s 30-something and 0, he’s doing really well, he’s going to the Final Four.’ And every time at the end of the game, end of the season, we don’t win a championship, I say ‘are you happy now? Since you want to give Coach all this praise?’

I love Coach, I think he’s a great guy, he helps people out, he brings us back, he’s treated me with nothing but respect, but I’m talking about coaching. I’m not talking about personal, I’m talking about coaching. If you’re going to coach these kids, let’s make them play the game the right way

That is some pretty harsh criticism from a former UK player and I would give anything if DA would have kept his mouth shut. We do not need this kind of publicity. I have always been a huge DA fan but must admit, after reading what he said to the Louisville radio station, some of my opinions of him are changing. He is certainly entitled to his opinions but that kind of stuff should stay in house and not be aired in public.

I don't think we disagree with DA but not sure if any of us would have said it out loud. We all talk about some of these guys going to the draft when they are not ready. Well he actually said what I am feeling. No where in my wildest dreams would I have sent anyone but Karl to the draft. The rest all needed more seasoning in the college game. Sure they have potential but back in the 80s and 90s they had potential also, but they stayed around and got better. That helped them to stay in the league longer as witnessed by some of the older players still in the NBA. Some of these guys leaving early are now finding it harder to stay in the league. I think we're going to see more and more of our guys not making it past 2-4 years and then having to go elsewhere. We should have a roster right now of 12 guys but we'll be lucky to have 6 guys who can get double digit minutes this coming year. There is nothing like learning through mistakes.

Bama, I sure hope you are not putting me in that "we".

I violently disagree with his statement and think he should have kept his mouth shut even if he feels that way. That kind of talk by former players hurts our program.

My goodness, what do people expect, a championship every years and every player staying for 4 years?

Cal may get fed up with this negative BS at some point in time and jump to the NBA, I for one would not blame him one bit. We could go back to the good old days and just hope we make the tournament with a few 3 stars players on the team.

DA certainly is entitled to his opinion and so am I. My opinion is he acted like an asshole.

Rant over.

Boom goes the dynamite! If he really cared about the program he would of kept his mouth shut and got with Coach privately. All this does is bring negative attention our way, where in the near future we may have a down year!

By our standards this will probably be a down year. My concern is what is going on in the minds of these 5 star recruits. We can only guess since this hasn't happened lately. I don't believe we have been shut out in the spring recruiting period before. It had to be something that happened at UK for all of them to wait until they seen 7 guys leave and then not a one picked UK. We may be just fine but I'm not believing it until I see it.

Couldn't agree more. I mean c'mon, UK wins 38 consecutive games and gets another final four and a former cat(who in no way could be a Cal fan) starts spewing garbage. Are we seriously to the point where we as UK fans are not happy with a season we just had?

DA is one of those players who got sick or people comparing this years team to his and had to make a point about it, that's why he made his comments about how his team had to play against pro's.

I say good job CATS! I hope next year is almost as good as this one.

There is no way anyone can't believe we had a great year. They can disagree on the attitude of the players and some of their thinking. I know we all would love to see every player stay for 4 years and bring more championships to UK. I personally can't agree that the one and done is a good policy. I understand how DA and others think that kids are not ready to play against grown men in the NBA, with a few exceptions. I understand when they stay in school there is always the possibility of them getting injured and hurting their chance to play in the NBA and become millionaires. I also read the news where Cal takes the blame for key losses. If we are to believe what he says then we have to believe that he is the one responsible for the loss. If we have supporters out there who are not believing him when he takes the blame then Cal must be feeding a bunch of malarkie to the kids and us as well. I've followed this team for way too long to give any coach a free ride even if he has been the best (maybe) coach ever. If we stop and think about it a few of these kids who decided to leave early could still return after they've seen there is still room for them on this roster. They have until some date in June to withdraw and return to school. If I was Dakari that is just what I'd do since there is plenty of room for him to get minutes.

First, I believe it was totally wrong for Anderson to come out with these comments in public. I understand we all have a right to speak, but as a former Cat he should have made his comments known to Cal directly. With that said, I can't say that I disagree with some of what he said, however the championship game against UConn comments are off the mark. We did not have the quick guards as Louisville did to match up against Napier and their other guard.

Have never met DA. He was a great player, lots of speed and talent. He hurt his knee, which is why is out of the NBA. He has wrote a book or books and proclaims himself to be somewhat of a life coach for young athletes. I am guessing he still has his league money and he is not in a financial bind.

Cal has had him on campus speaking to the players in the past. He has made a point of making public comments, whenever a player has had an injury, for them to call him and he can tell them how it is to come back from an injury.

The whole injury and blowing out the knee is one of the reasons that young men who are top prospects want to make their pro money as early as they can, before they get an injury.

Not sure why DA decided to open his mouth an talk ill of the program. He must have an axe to grind. I am just guessing, but maybe he was told he couldn't have access to the players and now he is pissed off at Coach and the program. I don't know. I just think it is odd, that he would make the comments that he made.

Nothing wrong with him voicing his opinion of the college game and what young men should do, but calling out the coach of a program and making disparaging remarks about his old school sounds to me like he is bitter about something.
