He looks athletic and probably can play 3 positions at 6'5" and a good leaper. You can see his athletic ability in this video and his defense could be real useful too.

He could end up being the x factor for next year's team. He is a gifted athlete who appears to be able to jump out of the gym. We may have gotten a steal in this one. I was very impressed with his play in the Jordan Brand classic, a game in which he was playing hurt but still managed to score 6 points and showed signs of playing good defense.

Couldn't agree more Matthews definitely will get minutes next season and will be a fan favorite. Next years team has a lot of talent and by tournament time should be ready to make a run. It's going to be exciting watching them get better as the season progresses.

Matthews will play and make himself known. He should get time at both the 2 and 3 positions. He is vastly underrated as far as I am concerned.

With all due respect Bruce I don't think a top 40 recruit can labeled as a nice "surprise". With his ranking nationally he should be able to come in and contribute immediately, especially if Coach recruited him.
I expect him to be a solid player and perhaps a pretty good wing for us next year..

I think he was a rather high priority recruit for Cal, wasn't he the first one we signed for the upcoming season????

Ed, with all the talent we have seen in the last few years it's been hard for some very talented players to get a lot of playing time. Last year the talent was so good Cal had to platoon teams to get every one a fair chance to play. This year we don't have quite that much talent but we do have enough that some very talented players like Ulis who was a top 25 player in his class will more than likely start at the point and Briscoe ranked 14 in this years class will most likely start at the 2 guard. Matthews is a very talented player that is ranked right around 50 in this years class but probably won't start, however will see plenty of playing time as he is talented and also can play 3 positions. I guess my use of the word "surprise" may have not been the word that I should have used. I tried to point out Matthews will be on the floor with some very talented players and will get a lot of minutes for the Cats.

no prb bruce - u know basketball and players and keep us all informed for which I am very grateful.
I believe he will get a lot of playing time in relief of course but still a critical part of next years team..
