You have to give Kyle and his new coach kudos Mark Few for stepping up his game and being one of the better players in the country.

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has selected the Gonzaga forward Kyle Wiltjer as its Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week for games ending the week of Sunday, Dec. 14. The USBWA’s weekly honor is presented by Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook.

As the West Coast Conference Player of the Week, Wiltjer was nominated for the weekly award, which was chosen by a representative of the USBWA board of directors from a list of Division I conference players of the week. This is the sixth season that the USBWA has selected a national player of the week.

Wiltjer, a 6-10 junior from Portland, Ore., registered back-to-back 20-point games in a pair of wins over Pac-12 opponents. Last Wednesday, Wiltjer was 9-of-14 from the field and scored 21 points in an 81-66 win over Washington State. Then on Saturday, Wiltjer led the Zags to an 87-74 win at UCLA with a team-high 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting.

Overall in the two games, he was 18-for-27 (.667) from the field, 5-for-7 (.714) from behind the arc, and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Against WSU he also had six rebounds, four assists, a block and a steal. Then at UCLA, he had four rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Looks as though Kyle is going to carry Gonzaga this season.

He definitely is a very big part of their team and way they play the game. I really miss him but know the move he made was a good one and only wish him the best. The way he can shoot the 3 ball he does have a chance to make a NBA team when he leaves college. imo

He did some rebounding too as he had over 4 rebounds a game with the Cats and has averaged over 5 boards a game with Gonzaga.

I just wonder? I know they play ball a little different than we do but a lot of people across the country don't understand that. And I'm sure there are a good number of players out there that don't understand it either. Ignorance of the situation could hurt UK down the road. If you haven't already figured out where I'm going with this I'll say it. This could be the reason we don't end up with Zimmerman. But probably not the only reason. I would almost guarantee we don't have much of a chance to get him anyway. I have narrowed the field of possibilities to Bragg which I think has been ours for a long time. The other one we are leading with and very likely will get is Newman. That is the sum of what I think we will add to our current 3 recruits to make a class of 5(1 center,1 PF, 1 PG, 1 SG & 1 SF). Of course there's the possibility that Thon Maker moves up to 2015 and we may have a good shot at him. With 6 frosh we would have to send 5 guys to the NBA this year. If that works out I would be happy.

Bama hope you are right, Bragg and Newman would be a decent recruiting season and with the players we will have coming back it's going to be another great season for the Cats next year.

Kentucky coachs winning percentages:

Rupp-82%
Hall-74%
Sutton-69%
Pitino-81%
Tubby-76%
Gillispie-59%
Cal-81%

Four of our last 7 basketball coachs records were over 75% which is unbelievable.

It is good to see Wiltjer doing well. I still think he will need to muscle up, if he wants to have a career in the NBA. He could probably make a good living over seas. But, because he is terrible on defense with the slow footwork, he would need to be Bill Lambier type, who crashed the boards but also shot lights out from the 3.

3 point shooters are worth their weight in gold in the NBA but Boom does bring up a good point in Wiltjer's foot speed and strength.

It would help him to get a little quicker too but that is hard to do. I think if he continues his shooting ability he will have a shot in the pro's but the deck is stacked against him.

He could always end up being a Larry Bird type player. Bird was never the most athletically gifted player on the floor but you weren't going to out work him!

Bird was a lot more athletic than you think and he was a heck of a defensive player too.

Bird was a much harder worker than most people realize. Why do you think he spent so much extra time in the gym? To be the very best that he could be!

Very few players are gifted enough just to play at that high level without putting extra time most every day.
