Yahoo sports went after him pretty hard.

Mike Krzyzewski wanted to talk about USA Basketball winning yet another gold medal in international competition, or at the very least, the upcoming season for his Blue Devils.

But instead, much of his news conference Thursday morning centered on defending himself against accusations of using USA Basketball — and its access to talented teenage basketball players — as a recruiting advantage, as a recent Yahoo! Sports column argued.

The columnist didn't mince words when, in essence, he argued that the only person with anything to gain from star NBA players competing for USA Basketball in international competitions was its coach, Duke's Krzyzewski. The advantage, the columnist argued, was two-fold: it gave Krzyzewski access to younger players trying out for and competing on the U.S. under-19 team (i.e. the nation's elite recruits involved in the feeder program); and it also gave Krzyzewski a chance to promote and publicize his close, personal relationships with the sports' biggest stars, from LeBron James to Kevin Durant. If a top recruit wanted to get to the NBA, who better to help him get there than someone close to the superstars they idolize?

Coach K would have just ignored this article if there was nothing to the advantage he gains which is quite a bit. Both he, Boeheim, Donovan and all involved in USA basketball gain a tremendous advantage by coaching these teams. Like Coach Cal said, any college coach would love to coach these teams so why is it left up to the likes of Boeheim, Coach K, Donovan and even Jerry Congalereo to determine who coaches these teams and gains these advantages. There is no doubt that Coach Cal would use it to his advantage if he got that kind of access to the players yearly. Put Coach K, Boeheim and Donovan plus Shaka Smart on the same level playing field all the other college coaches are restricted too when it comes to young rising stars.

I think that Yahoo writer has hit a sore spot with Coach Boeheim and Coach K, ratface as Norm and I refer to him.

Ray, you make a good point on coach K jumping at the insulation that he took advantage of coaching the USA team in the recruiting process. He knows darn well it has been a boon for him in the recruiting top players and doubt he will give up his position until he retires coaching Duke.

I think it would be a good idea if they banned all active college coachs from coaching any teams other than the college that has them under contract. There would be plenty of professional coachs and assistant coachs that would do a great job coaching our Olympic team.

I agree Bruce, that way no college coach would gain any advantage by coaching anyone other than the players they recruit. I think that writer hit a sore spot with Boeheim and Coach K with his article.

Its not really gaining a advantage, if its legal with ncaa, and there is not a coach in the united states, that wouldn't jump at the opportunity, to coach for the usa title. yea rat face is a arrogant rascal. but wat can one do about him coaching that team? Boeheim is just a scum, if cal did tell him that about coach K, and he told the media about it, that is a low down thang to do, but I don't believe for one minute cal said anything about the RAT. Boeheim needs to hang it up.

Bean, I have never been a Boeheim fan either, along with Ratface. The article was written by a Yahoo writer and others coaches certainly are entitled to their opinions on this topic. There is no doubt that if Coach Cal had the position Coach K does with USA basketball he would use it to his advantage, any coach would, that still does not make it right and is something that the NCAA should have rules against. Keep all things equal for all when it comes to recruiting high school talent.

Your right on Ray and 10-4 for equality in college basketball no matter what team or coach. If we are truly honest I'm not real sure that Cal bringing in scouts for a two day combine isn't the best idea either as it does give us a advantage for recruiting the best athletes much like coach K coaching the USA basketball team.
