Gotta love and there is probably a lot of truth in his statement.

John Calipari “had more NBA players” at UK than Lakers do [Wink]

When I had a little spare time Friday, I went to check out what Mike Bianchi of the OrlandoSentinel.com had been writing about college basketball.

As usual, he didn’t disappoint with comments he had from radio conversation with former Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy over rumors that John Calipari might leave UK for the Los Angeles Lakers.

“I have no idea why he would want to go the Lakers,” Van Gundy said during his weekly appearance on Bianchi’s Open Mike radio show. “He has more NBA players (at Kentucky) this year than the Lakers do. It would be a step down talent-wise for him.”

Bingo. And he’s probably right when you look at the two rosters, especially if you look two-three years down the road.

Van Gundy also said he thought Calipari and Billy Donovan of Florida were two college coaches who would make successful NBA bosses.

“The game is different in the NBA; the rules are different, but what’s really different is the pace of the season is so much faster with so many more games,” Van Gundy told Bianchi. “The preparation is so much different and the amount of information you have to give to players in a short amount of time.

“But there’s no doubt they (current college coaches) can do it. John Calipari has already done it. He’s one that (NBA teams) would have much interest in because he already understands (the NBA game) and he’s very good at developing young players.”
