I was listening to Mike and Mike this morning and while he was talking about a variety of things, I found it quite interesting about his take on players first.
I've found it irritating in the past when he would say this instead of team or program first. After listening, I've kind of changed my mind.
Players first allows him to get the very best recruits while doing what's best for the player. That in turn benefits the program and team. His take is that doing anything other than players first, he is being selfish. At least that was my interpretation.

handycat,
I believe your interpretation to be correct and that is how I have always interpreted those words from Cal. That is why I have never understood people getting upset when Cal says it is a "players first" program.
-------------------- Wife's Mad. Told me we never talk anymore. And just last nite while watching super bowl told her 2 or 3 times to get me a coke and popcorn. Also told her not to forget to take out trash in the morning. Ain't that something. Also told me I was too indecisive. Can't figure out what to do about that. One nice thing I guess. She called me a pro crastinator. Don't know what a crastinator is but I guess I'm a good one for her to call me a pro. Gonna wait til tomorrow to look that up though. I love her but somrtimes can't help but thinking I should have told uncle Junior to keep his coon hound pup and stevens double barrel and also his youngest daughter.

A little off subject but it still blows my mind and pisses me off that Mudiay chose SMU over us. We are going to struggle next year at PG unless Andrew comes back.

The Ulis kid looks pretty solid to me..... I would love to have Andrew and Aaron back, and allow the new crop to learn it, play it and grow with it...... I have said all along that until we get a solid core of 2-4 returning players each year, with the influx of new McDonalds AA's, THEN we will be a consistent monster. The rate that we had 1 and dones going out the door was NEVER sustainable.. Hell, the NBA doesn't have that many slots......... and 5 years into this players first experiment, there is a real world understanding that the "business side" of playing hoops for money will plug the dam, and kids will begin to return for that 2nd and 3rd year...
The WALL class that put 6 in the first round.... didn't win a Championship.... it was the team with returning lettermen that put it all together with an influx of McD's talent...
I have loved each and every group that has come through here,,,, but as more and more "learn to stay", the entire team gets better, with far less personal, freshman welcome to college adjustments to hold them back..
The futures so bright I gotta wear shades....
