(You know who you are) Here is an article that completely disagrees with your theory that Cal is a good recruiter, but a terrible coach. His record speaks for itself.

I was trying to post that same article early this morning Norm when I was unable to log onto the site. Good article and one that is very hard to disagree with. I might second guess Coach Cal from time to time but have never bashed and don't want to see anyone else coaching our Cats. Second guessing is human nature to many old time Cat fans like myself, I even second guessed Rupp a few times. The only coach I never really cared for at UK was Billie Gillispie and we all know his fate. He was a raving maniac.

I wasn't thinking about you Ray, when I posted this. However, we do have a couple of regular posters here that just get on my nerves with the Cal castigation. I too have wondered about the wisdom of the one and done way of doing things, but I surely do love having the top one or two recruiting classes year after year. It's really hard to argue with success, and he's had a lot of that.

Good article. I have criticized Cals talent in the x an o department, and will still question it. Has he been a great coach, and won with lesser talent; yes he did at UMass. However, the last 5 years I just haven't seen great x and o coaching, he is a great recruiter, he does seem to get talented guys to play together (except for last year), he works the guys hard in practice (I have seen that personally), he is great with the pressure of the job, he cares for the kids. All very important things. I just don't think he is a great game coach, and I think that is okay for me to think that way and express my opinions. I certainly do not want him to go anywhere. I think he is a perfect fit, I just want him to continue to improve, as we all should continue to improve in anything we do., and adpt when needed. I love the way he has changed his demeanor with the team lately, and I think that is a big reason for the success. That shows me he can see when he needs to change something. I don't know if he will ever be a great x an do coach because he, as he has said before, counts on his guys being better than yours. I would love to see movement on offense, switching defenses, etc. but I don't think I will any time soon, and that is okay. That is just the kind of basketball I love to watch. I hope he is around for a while, and I hope he develops some more zone offensive plays, and some more movement on offense against man and zone. I do love having the best talent when they play together and play for the team. This has been a great finish to a frustrating season, and I hope it continues and becomes one of the greatest stories In UK basketball history. Go Cats!

As I've said before, sometimes you can find an easier road to the championship when some of the top teams have a down game and get knocked off before you would have to play them. In 1998 #1 AZ got beat by #3 Utah, and then they beat another #1 UNC. #8 Rhode Island knocked off #1 Kansas and #13 knocked off #4 Ole Miss. #3 Stanford knocked off #2 Purdue. Then #3 Utah knocked off #1 UNC. All of that left #2 UK having to beat the only #1 left, Duke in the southern region championship. Then they had to knock off two #3 seeds in the final four Stanford and Utah. If we can beat Michigan today that would leave us to play #7 UConn to get to the final where we would have to play either a #1 or 2 seed for the championship. We would have to beat either Florida or Wisconsin for the championship. The route could have been much harder if Kansas, Duke, Arizona, Syracuse or Virginia hadn't gotten knocked off earlier. I am starting to think we have a great chance to fool everyone now.

Some people are never happy unless we score on every possession. It kills me when I hear people talking negative about the coach or the Cats... and it's only halftime. At least wait until the game is over to question the coaching staff or the players. That's one reason why I watch every game by myself. [ 03-30-2014, 04:48 PM: Message edited by: PaulCat ]

Good article. The bashers have been quite for a while, we've been winning. As I've said before, they'll be back when we lose.
