From my perspective this is what I saw. It was far from what we saw in the Blue/White game. We got a look at how players can play defense and press and trap. Not real great yet but it looks like they will be good with a little more hard work.

Davis He found the going a little rough. Got some bumps that kept him from following thru on inside shots. He must and will learn to get tough. If not, he will not be the level of player we are expecting.

Gilchrist He just made himself a starter, if he continues playing like he did tonight. Good driver to the basket and tough defense.

Miller Hit some 3s late in the game. He will have to make himself more visable or his PT may decrease. Still plays good defense most of the time.

Teague He is faster than Knight and can take it to the hoop, but did miss a few easy ones after he got past his man. Showed he can also hit an outside shot.

Lamb He continues hitting the 3s at will. Showed he can play defense with the rest of the guys. Don't think he got much time at the point so will have to wait to see whether he fills in there for Teague.

Jones He got a slow start but still was a force inside. He will play a lot and could lead the team this year with a visible better attitude over last year. In otherwords, 6the scowl was missing.

Wiltjer He had a few flashes of greatness on driving for the shot but not sure if I saw him take a long shot. He will be longer than the other freshman making an impact.

Vargas He is improved from last year and won't hurt us bad when he fills in. He showed signs of being a lot better defender.

Overall, it is early and as Cal said they have a lot of work ahead. With only two more games before Kansas, they'll have to get a lot better as a team that can work together if they want to beat them. Davis, Wiltjer and Miller were the three who I think need more work before things get serious as far as competition. I think Lamb, Gilchrist, Jones and Teague are the closest to being ready.

I was really impressed with Gilchrist and Jones. I expected a lot more out of Davis and Miller but they did not live up to expectations last night. Coach Cal has said that Gilchrist must be a starter so it appears Miller might be coming off the bench in this his senior year.

It is way too early to judge these guys, imho. I firmly believe they will be in the final four wih a chance to owin it all, at the end of the year.

Point guard is my main concern. I was not impressed with the Cats PG, at the beginning of last season. But, he proved me wrong. I am still amazed that Cal can take a freshman PG every year and go as far as he does in the tourney.

I am not worried about MIller. He will be the glue that holds the team together, this season. Who starts and who doesn't isn't a big deal to me. I don't think they will lose more than 3 to 5 games this season and should be better than last year's team.

Hope they have the kinks worked out, by the time the tough games roll around. It should be a fun season to watch.

By the way, I prefer having a team full of top talented young guys over a veteran group of very good players. It is much easier to eliminate mistakes from talented youth, than to have very good players play perfect every game, just to win.

I think it's kind of hard to gauge play against a division 3 team that is small and has no scholarship players. It's obvious however how talented we are and it's obvious it's going to take awile for the freshman to get acclamated to playing with other talented players. It was a good first game but until we play teams that are more on our level it's going to be harder to judge where we stand.

This is not a knock on our team but i would be very surprised if we went undefeated. I wouldn't be surprised if we won our last game of the season however.

Here is Calipari's take on the game. He tells it and doesn't hold back.

We have a long way to go. I think everyone knows it. We've got a couple guys that play with great intensity. They're going to have to spend a lot of time on the court. That's just how it is. Mad, sad, happy, unhappy, they're going to have to be on the floor a lot because they have that intensity you need to win.

The good news is everybody in this building saw it, anybody that watched it on TV saw it. They also see we're not tough enough. First half, we couldn't post up. We couldn't go in the post and hold a position.

Again, Coach (Brian) Lane, I told those guys after, ‘Brian, you should be proud of them.’ They didn't back away. They started that game, made shots, played with unbelievable emotion, played harder than us, got every loose ball, took charges, did everything they had to do to stay in the game. Here we are with a big height advantage. I think probably five of our first six shots were 3s.

Am I missing something here? But that's what happens when you have a lot of young guys or guys that aren't playing with that fire that you got to play with. They'll settle.

Why you settle for 3s? It's easier. Go in there and get pushed and shoved and grabbed and hit? Stay right out here and shoot this. I hope it goes. If it doesn't, I'm good.

We got a ways to go. Marquis Teague played a good game for a point guard first time out. Showed some good poise. Missed some shots. But that's not what he's going to be doing for us. What he's going to be doing is nine assists, two turns, in a game where he played a lot of minutes and we were flying up and down the court.

I thought we were in shape until we played this thing. We didn't look like we were in very good shape, so we got a lot of work to do there. Defense, we didn't talk. Like I said, there are 60 teams right now, maybe more, that we could not beat if we had to play today. Thank goodness we got another couple weeks before we got to play another game, a real game.

Being their first offical game together, I liked what I saw from just about every player. I think we'll see vast improvement by the next exhibition game and then by the opening game of the season. I also think Teague will be an exceptional PG. He appeared to play more under control than Knight did, and Knight was a pretty darn good PG last year.

I don't like to put people down by name, but there is a very tall guy on our team who I don't think will see much court time this year. He's just slow, doesn't have much body control and seems lost with the ball in his hands. I wish him well this year, but I just don't see him getting off the bench much except in mop-up duty.

I thought Gilchrist was a stud and looked incredibly good. I was happy with Teague too. Davis looked like a 3-4 star player but can't be too critical because it was just one game. Wilcher looked ok and will get better. It's always tough for the guys to get in rhythm from the get-go.
The only thing that bothered me was they continue to play poor defense on the three.

I think the size of Transy had a lot to do with the way our front line players played. I am not at all worried about any of the players who played last night, they are all very talented and we are going to have an outstanding team this season. Miller is still my favorite player on this team as he has been for the past three years but the talent level of this group of young men is phenominal. I saw no real negatives considering it was their first scrimmage against a team wearing a different uniform from them. This team looks like one that is capable of having five double figure scorers night in and night out. Team wise I felt they should have been pounding it inside during the first half like they eventually did during the second half after coach got their attention. This team appear to all have great work ethnics.

I'm not at all disappointed in any of them but I'm wondering if we may all be a little too hyped about what they will do. I only have them losing 3 games this year and going all the way. It's possible but they may also lose 6-9 games. They don't have a lot of time before the real games start. We play a couple not so tough games next Mon and Fri but we return the following Tues(11 days away) with Kansas on a neutral court in the east. I hope they mesh together quickly. I think Teague, Gilchrist, Lamb, and Jones have spots locked up but the 5th spot could be up for grabs. Depending on the size of the opponent, Cal could go big or small depending on who he thinks could help better. Davis' weaknest in the post and Millers' disappearing act until the final part of the game could turn out to be the deciding factor on which one gets the starting nod. I know Miller is a senior and Davis is probably the #1 draft next year. If Davis expects to be there next year he's got to learn to use what body he has right now. Miller has got to get involved in the game early. They can both do it but will they? It's early but I thought we would see Wiltjer challenging Lamb for 3s. Hope he gets settled in and gets some 3 opportunities.
