Here are a few tidbits from the UK basketball luncheon.
On Big Blue Madness: “You know why we do Big Blue Madness? So our players feel that sense of responsibility when they see all the fans and work hard”
- On getting the Kentucky job: “It took me 20 years to get this job. You know why I’m having fun with it? Because it took me 20 years!”
- Cal said the Kentucky Effect (this year’s slogan, it seems) is “thinking like a king” and “chasing a National title and having six guys drafted.”
- According to Cal, this year’s team is “unconventional” and has “six, maybe seven” starters who “all play the same position.” Compares it to his team at UMass in ‘92.
- Hopes to have eight players in the rotation, maybe nine
- On this season: “I really like my team. Our schedule is ridiculous, as always.”
- Cal’s vision for this season: “My vision is to be one of those teams slugging it out at the end of the year (for a national championship).”
- Cal on Michael Kidd-Gilchrist: “If you thought DeAndre Liggins played hard and slashed, wait til you see Michael.”
- Cal says Marquis Teague loves to be coached: “When I talk to him, he’s zeroed in on me. Whatever I say, he does.”
- Cal said “the light went on” for Terrence Jones, who has since dedicated himself to being “special.”
- Jones is finishing first in all the runs in practice so far.
- Kyle Wiltjer made a good impression on Kevin Durant, who told Cal “That kid can play” when on campus last week.
- During the recruiting process, Anthony Davis told Cal he wants to play shooting guard, to which Cal agreed and told the crowd: “I want you to know we post up our shooting guards a lot.”
- Cal again reiterated that this is a “players-first program”: “I’d be disappointed if we won a national title and no one was drafted. It’s about the players reaching their goals.”
- “This is the Commonwealth’s team. Everyone wants to get mad about that, but it is!”
