A bit of a surprise hire but i'm sure coach G knows a lot more about him than any of us. I found the attached article that gives some info on what he has done.
Brooks, who turns 40 in August, will coordinate the Red Raiders' recruiting efforts as well as assist Dickey with day-to-day operations. Brooks was 54-84 from 1993-98 at Houston after serving as a Cougars assistant coach for seven years. He was also an assistant at Lamar University for five years.
''I'm very excited about this opportunity to get back into basketball and with someone I respect and admire as much as James Dickey,'' Brooks said. ''It's refreshing to be back, and it's great to be at a place like Texas Tech.''
Brooks became the first new assistant hired in the wake of a reorganization of Dickey's staff that began June 16 when Pinkney resigned. On that same day, Tech athletic director Gerald Myers said Dickey's entire staff of assistant coaches would be replaced.
Dickey did speak about Brooks' hiring, calling the Houston native a ''great addition to (Tech's) program.'' Dickey said Brooks' personal qualities and proven skills as a recruiter were two major factors in his hiring. Brooks has strong recruiting ties in Louisiana and Texas, particularly in the Houston area. He recruited several native Houston-area players to UH, including Moses Malone Jr., who transferred to Tech in January.
He's got a great recruiting record, and that's one area where we have to do a better job,'' Dickey said. ''Alvin's got a great reputation nationally, and especially in Texas and the Houston area. We have to make Texas our No. 1 recruiting ground, and there happen to be a lot of great players in the Houston area right now.''

Dick Gabriel apparently (although I did not hear it) interviewed Billy Clyde tonight who said that Alvin Brooks has NOT yet been hired as the third assistant coach. This is contrary to the reports on WLEX yesterday that the decision had been made. However, it is not clear whether Billy Clyde said he wouldnt be hiring Brooks or just hasnt. Either way, it is not official yet.

Looks like it is the same as last time. They won't admit to anything until the paper work has been signed.

Bama Cat, here is the latest info that kind confirms your post. It looks like that's the way Coach G does things. It's the way it should be, not final till the i's are dotted and the T's crossed.
Colin Killian, who worked as a publicist at Texas A&M when Gillispie coached there, said UK's new coach is typically hesitant to release information until the process has been completed.
Killian, who acknowledged hearing speculation about Brooks joining Gillispie at Kentucky, endorsed such a reunion of coaches. Brooks worked for Gillispie the last four seasons: one at Texas-El Paso and three at Texas A&M.
"He's awesome," Killian said of Brooks. "He's a great guy. His relationship with the players is unbelievable. He's really laid back, the opposite of Billy."
If Texas A&M is an accurate guide, Gillispie plays the demanding "bad cop" while the assistants take the role of compassionate "good cops," Killian said.

Maybe I missed it but neither have I seen confirmation on the hiring of Blue Devil Roshown McLeod. Confirmation?
Also, there's a youtube 5+ minute video of Coach Brooks (with a bit of BCG) at A&M but I can't find link. [ 07-25-2007, 10:33 AM: Message edited by: prophet ]
