Even though I was a Cal supporter to the end. I still believed it was the right to separate. However, I believe our obnoxious fanbase is the one thing keeping Coach from coming to UK right now. For example we can’t even unite and get behind Pope. And he is one of ours! Sure his resume isn’t Scot Drews, Donovan’s or Hurley but at what point do we just become a passionate supportive fanbase? Maybe then a Billy Donovan would jump at the opportunity.

I am quite sure the fanbase will give him a warm, warm welcome. According to Pitino, he embraces the name "Kentucky" and relishes representing the university.

If he does just that, he will win 90% of the fans. Recruit players who want to play for the University of Kentucky first and foremost!

But, I think Pope's intellect will make Cal look like a kindergardener. He is very sharp, and will not shy away from trying new schemes on both ends of the court. I think that will get us up to 95% of the fans.

The other 5% (who are VERY vocal) won't be happy until he wins not one, but TWO national championships.

As the day has gone on, I am excited to get started with Coach Pope. I wasn't really disappointed, I was a little surprised. I am excited for a fresh start and for someone to come in that really gets the program, the university, and the state. I hope everyone will embrace him and really get behind what he is going to try to build. It will take time, but any quality coach should be able to have success at UK. Look at how many different coaches have won championships here. Let's hope he's the next one.

Exactly. The coach will have access to the whole package of advantages that being at UK brings. The legacy is dormant, not dead. The resources are there. The fan base is there. Cal just didn't tap into them, or did so for reasons that did not align with many fans.

Pope can succeed here. Certainly he is no Billy Gillespie.

Pope hasn't set the world on fire at Utah Valley and BYU. When he got his required service in at BYU he switched to a top program when he moved to UK for his final 2 years of college. That in itself shows a move of genius proportions. He won a championship by fitting his way into a group of kids who knew why they were at UK. They may hold the record for ave difference in score for that season they won everything.

He has the head to know how to use all the weapons and advantages being at UK gives him. There will be some very good players on his first roster that will make us competitive. No predictions on wins and losses the first year though.
