Kentucky needs big men, and Matt Haarms just became one of the best available this offseason.
On Monday, Haarms announced he would be leaving Purdue as a graduate transfer, instantly making him one of the top players available in college basketball, whether it be high school recruits or college transfers.
The 7-3, 250-pound Haarms played an instrumental role on the 2018-19 Purdue squad that nearly made the Final Four if not for a miracle finish in regulation by Virginia, who ultimately won in overtime en route to winning the national championship. Haarms averaged 9.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game that season.
In the 2019-20 season, Haarms averaged 8.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game. He shot 52.4% from the field, 31.3% from deep (attempted 32 triples) and 63.4% from the free throw line. He ranks fourth in program history with 210 career blocks.

I’ve seen Haarms play numerous times. He’s tall and that’s about all (i’m Also a poet among many other professionss). I just don’t see him being much help to UK style basketball.

If he could give us those same numbers as he put up last season at Purdue, that would be a huge help if Richards stays in the draft. With Nick gone, EJ will be our best big man, and that could be a problem.

He is a great rim defender, and is the very definition of a 'wide body' in the paint. He could be the perfect big man to play a true dribble-drive offense, something we have never quite seen at UK.
Imagine. We have a bunch of guards coming in, all long and athletic, who can put the ball on the floor and drive it. One big lumbering giant on the weak-side block for rebounds and put-backs would be awesome. [ 04-07-2020, 10:53 AM: Message edited by: Tiptree ]

Yeah, he isn't "thick", but he is 7'3" and 250lbs. Looking at him, he seems skinny (well, compared to Mel Turpin maybe), but he is wiry strong with some mean elbows. He can certainly spread out and take up space.
We have had some busts in big men over the years, but I think he will not be in that category. Plus, he has some really cool hair... we are losing some players with awesome hair, so we must fill that need.
I say go get that big boy. [ 04-07-2020, 11:11 AM: Message edited by: Tiptree ]

A Shagari Alene and Lucats Orbzut he is not even though he is up there above. 7 foot. There is not much better than him left out there, unless a new transfer puts his name in.

Agree. Now that that is settled, will he be able to convince him by using our last two transfers and how they were thriving at UK.
