At least to me. My grandson will be getting his degree in chemistry in a couple of months. He applied to several universities for his PhD including University of Colorado, Iowa, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Kentucky. He was accepted by all with a full scholarship and assistant teaching position to help out with expenses. The winner is the University of Kentucky Wildcats!
I know this isn't the right forum to post on but this proud grandpa wanted to brag to as many people as possible.

Great news, Handy. It is a well-kept secret about majoring in the natural sciences or engineering -- if you get into a graduate program, it almost always comes with tuition being paid PLUS a stipend. You will be expected to work as a teaching assistant, and then as a research assistant, but hey! It sure beats paying full price!
Congrats to your grandson. I spent many years in the Chemistry-Physics building at UK! [ 03-11-2018, 08:52 PM: Message edited by: Tiptree ]

This brings to mind something from my days at UK. One of my bridge tournament buddies at UK was working on his doctorate, and was offered his choice of an assistantship or a fellowship. The assistantship paid more money and, without thinking it over, he took that choice. Later he realized that was a mistake. The assistantship required him to teach classes, the fellowship required no work duties What made his choice a mistake was the assistantship was taxable, while the fellowship was tax exempt. What made his complaints about how much he was paying for the privilege of teaching classes was that he was working on his doctorate in economics. he had a hard time living that down.
