Congratulations to Alex Poythress, who was just named one of four finalists for the 2016 Arthur Ashe Jr. Athlete of the Year award, given annually to the most outstanding male and female sports scholars of color in the country. This is Poythress’ third year being nominated by UK for the the award, and he’s joined by Corey Brown (men’s soccer at Queens University of Charlotte), Marcus Paige (men’s basketball at North Carolina) and Paul Pitts III (football at San Diego State) on the final list. The male and female athlete of the year will be announced April 7.

To be included, students need to compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2, and be active on their campuses or in their communities. Approximately 1,000 male and female students from across the country were nominated. Past recipients of the award include: Robert Griffin III, Kara Lawson, Marshall Faulk, and Jacque Vaughn, former head coach of the NBA’s Orlando Magic.

Poythress finished his UK career with 966 career points, 597 rebounds and 77 blocks. He’s just the 12th player in Kentucky’s basketball history to post 900 points, 500 rebounds and 70 blocks in a career. The Clarksville, Tenn., native graduated in just three years with a degree in business marketing. He earned a 3.517 undergraduate grade-point average and is now pursuing a master’s of science in kinesiology and health promotion with an emphasis on sport leadership. He finished his first semester of grad school with a 4.0 GPA.

Thanks, Alex, for always making us proud.

The stat that stands out about Poy is that he accomplished all these stats and numbers while basically accomplishing them in 3 years. He was injured in the 2014-2015 season and played in only played in 8 games.

An award for the best athlete of color? Sounds like a racist award to me. What color do you have to be to be considered?

It is certainly a racist award in my opinion. At least the ones with Wooten, Naismith etc are open to players of all color wherein the Arthur Ashe award can only go to a black. Were the situation reversed for the Wooten award etc, you would hear racial overtones coming from all the media.

It was simply created in honor of a great black athlete for other great black athletes.

That makes it exclusionary to other races.

Racism is okay in this country, as long as the race that is being excluded is white.

Ray and Boomdaddy, I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one that feels that this is just wrong. If it were indeed turned around, The federal government would be coming down on it. Loretta Lynch would undoubtedly file charges!
