Catmandoo, I hit a 5 iron 225 yards today. Purest shot I've ever hit. I'd love to play a round of golf with you.

That's 50-60 yards further than I can hit it!

At my age, and not having played in at least 15 years, I suspect that's about 200 yards further than I could hit one!

Here is the average distance for a touring pro.

Average Carry Per Club
A 2009 article on the Swingman Golf website listed the average carry (the distance a ball travels in the air) of each club used by PGA Tour players over the previous four years. The statistics are based on the PGA Tour’s Shotlink system, which tracks each shot played on the tour. The average shot hit with a driver carried 260 yards and traveled a total of 287.3 yards, including the roll. An average 3-wood shot carried 238 yards and the average 5-wood carried 223 yards. The typical carry for a 3-iron shot was 203 yards; for a 4-iron 189; for a 5-iron 181 ; for a 6-iron 169; for a 7-iron 160; for an 8-iron 149; and for a 9-iron 136. The average PGA Tour pitching wedge shot carried 122 yards.

rlt, Did you carry 225 yards with your 5 iron? I can see that it's possible to hit a 5 iron that far if you played on a "'very" hard fairway and it rolled a "long" way.

Catmandoo, it carried about 185 and ran out the rest of the way. I was hitting the ball a long way. I hit a pitching wedge a 140 yards all in the air. I shot an 86, I couldn't putt. I three putted six holes.

Bruce - Davis Love iii told me years ago that he could hit a 9 iron up to 200 yrds depending on much he "hooded" the face. His normal was around 145. He then (we were at a driving range in No Va as he was preparing for a tournament in Md) hit his 9 iron and made a green 195 yrs out.

Believe you are showing averages not exactly what they could hit if they really wanted to..

That is true, changing the face of the club makes a "huge" difference. The distances I posted was using their normal swing....Hooding a iron makes a big difference and is used mainly to keep the ball low to avoid tree limbs and other obstructions.
