Congratulations to my alumni High School Belfry in Pike County Kentucky for winning the AAA Kentucky state championship beating Bell County 30 to 20. This makes Belfry 5 state championships in the last 7 years.

ProBlue, Belfry looks to have one heck of a good football program!

yes catmandoo they do. It starts with their middle schools 6,7,8Th grades. They run all things by the Belfry high school. They run all offense and defense sets that the high school does. The high school coach keeps in close contact with all the middle school coaches. The high school coach is the winningest coach of all time in the state of Kentucky with over 400 wins. His name is Philip Haywood. 1A, 3A, and 4A Champs were won by 3 eastern kentucky schools within 60 miles of each other.

GA Cat I think Bell County has won some state championships also . They have a good football program. They won it in 1991 as 3A and 2008 as a 4A school.

I think a cross country state title is the only thing my alma mater (sp) can lay claim to. That and Jack Tingle was an all-SEC player for the University of Kentucky!

Jack Tingle played for the Cats 1943-1947, scoring 948 points in 114 games. He was drafted by Washington after graduating from UK.

At the end of 1981, Bell, after years of terrible football dating back to my dad's senior year in high school (1960), fired it's long standing coach.

In 1982, Bell hired a new coach and promptly lost every game in that season.

In 1983, Bell hired Dudley Hilton and went 6 and 5.

In 1984 (My senior year) we were 10-1 but did not make the playoffs due to the one loss being in district. We beat our cross county rivals (Middlesboro High) for the first time since 1960.

In 1985 we made the state playoffs for the first time.

From that point forward, Bell has been a significant force in Kentucky football with two state titles and many trips to the playoffs.

I played against Belfry in the '60's. They had some kid they kept calling "Spicer"...he was the most pigeon-toed person I have ever seen-he played running back. They beat us like we cussed their mother, with "Spicer" scoring 4 touchdowns...at least!

MountainMafia who did you play for ? Belfry had one great player in the 60's I remember is name was Rich Caster and he was first team All-State went to UK made first team All- American then was drafted by the Miami Dolphins. I heard he married one of the teams owners daughter then retired. He passed away a couple years ago. I graduated in 1971.

I played for Cumberland HS, Harlan County...graduated 1967. Your description of Rich Caster gives me flashbacks of “Spicer”. [Frown]
