Like to read stories like this and admire his work ethic and desire to get better.
It would have been easy for Farrington Huguenin to have been discouraged about his college football career.
He originally signed with Kentucky in 2010 after a stellar high school career in Columbia, S.,C., where he had 121 tackles his senior year and was time in 4.56 seconds in the 40-yard dash. However he had to attend North Carolina Tech Preparatory Christian Academy in 2010 — where he had 17 quarterback sacks during the season — to get himself ready to come to UK.
Next he was redshirted in 2011. He did play in all 12 games in 2012 — Joker Phillips’ final season as head coach — and got his first start in the defensive line against Tennessee in the season finale. Coach Mark Stoops arrived for the 2013 season and he h ad 14 tackles while playing in 12 games and makes his only start against Alabama. Last year he had a career-high 18 tackles and again played in 12 games.
But he wanted to be more than a dependable reserve. He’s added 40 pounds since his arrival at UK and this season has been a steadying force on UK’s defensive line.
Defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot said “Farro” gained 20 pounds of muscle during the offseason to raise his weight to 285 pounds.
“He’s a very good technician, plays the run well. He’s played here for a lot of years and has always been in a backup role but has seen a lot of game reps. He brings experience, and now he brings size now,” said Eliot.
Stoops raved all summer about what Huguenin did on and off the field leadership-wise.
“He’s been so steady. I just like his demeanor and like the way he goes about his business. He’s not one of those overly talkative guys, but he gets the job done,” Stoops said.
He certainly dd in the win at South Carolina last week where he had five tackles, including four solo stops, to help UK end a 22-game road losing streak. Hugeunin says he never doubted his time would come.
