Stoops is ready for the opportunity to turn the Kentucky program around and has the backing of Mitch Barnhart.

He’s grateful for what Kentucky athletics director Mitch Barnhart did for him, but coach Mark Stoops was more focused on winning this year than the contract extension he now has through the 2019 season — meaning he has five years left on his contract just like the day he did when he signed with UK.

Stoops said the contract extension, which was announced Friday just before the Wildcats headed to Missouri for Saturday’s game, showed that both he and UK officials are “committed” to the football program.

“Really excited about the direction he has us going on and off the field. Academically, our guys have made progress. Athletically, we’ve made progress, and on the recruiting trail, there’s no one that works harder than Mark and his staff, so we’re really excited about that,” Kentucky athletics director Mitch Barnhart said.

“He’s been a real pleasure to work with and has made coming over to the Nutter Center and Commonwealth Stadium a lot of fun and I appreciate it very, very much. (The) success we’ve had so far this year has been encouraging, but that’s not what this is about. It’s certainly moved us in the right direction. It’s about the general direction of the trajectory of our program and so we’re really, really excited about that piece. We’ll continue to build on that and work on that through the rest of this season and over the next five and a half years.”

Barnhart said Stoops had “energized” the fan base in his two years at UK.

“That’s exciting for us. He’s been extremely helpful to our program in the fundraising area as we build our new football training center. We break ground on that in January. He’s done a tremendous job in the fund-raising area as well and I’m appreciative of that. The recruits he’s brought in have played an integral role again in the growth of this program,” Barnhart said.

Stoops new contract makes Dan Mullen that lowest paid coach in the SEC. He happens to be coaching the #1 ranked team in the nation, this season.

Will Mullen stay at State or will he move on?
