Willis is going to be a big part of our defensive backfield.

Nate Willis is Kentucky’s only senior cornerback and even he has limited experience after transferring to UK last year following his junior college career. He arrived on campus only a few weeks before the season began, but had 35 tackles in nine games and even started seven times before missing the final three games because of an injury.

He was rated as the No. 3 junior college cornerback in the nation by 247Sports.com after helping Arizona Western College to an 8-2 record in 2012 and a victory in the El Toro Bowl — the team’s first bowl game win in more than 40 years. He had three interceptions that 2012 season even though he played basketball, and not football, in his final two years of high school in Florida.

Now Willis is healthy, happy and eager to show that he’s even a better player than what Kentucky fans saw last year.

Question: Are you happy just to be healthy and playing?

Willis: “Definitely. It is a dream come true. I am way more comfortable, way more faster. Everything is coming to me natural. Everybody out here is using their natural ability. We have had a year in the defense. Last year we were kind of iffy on what to do and thinking about other things instead of doing what we need to do and doing your part. Now it just comes to us natural and we are just doing what we have to do to be better overall.”

Question: It must feel a lot better to be here than this time a year ago when you were back in Florida still waiting to get cleared academically when preseason camp started?

Willis: “I am miles ahead of where I was last year when I first came here. I talk with the coaches a lot and they give me pointers, give me tips. I am taking their words of wisdom and advice and using it on the field to be the best DB (defensive back) in the nation. I am trying to lead the nation in interceptions and pass breakups and try to be the No. 1 DB in the draft.”
