He sure is big enough and with his great attitude he probably will play in his first season as a Cat.
Matt Elam hasn’t even signed his official letter of intent, but he’s already mapping out his playing time for Kentucky football next season.
“I definitely anticipate to go in and play because I feel like I’m big and strong enough that I can play in the SEC,” Elam said. “But it’s going to take a lot of hard work to get there.”
Elam is the No. 3 rated defensive lineman in the nation per 247Sports.com and is a potential anchor in the middle of Kentucky’s line.
“They see me mainly playing the nose tackle and playing over the one,” Elam said. “They think I’m very athletic and that I can play all over the defensive line. Not at the defensive end position, but mainly out to three and four technique.”
Elam may have the skill set to make an immediate impact, but his weight could be a factor at 6-foot-6, 380 pounds.
“The one thing that all of these college coaches have hounded him about is his weight,” said Chad Lewis, Elam’s coach at John Hardin. “Matt is effective at 380 for two or three plays. But to be able to play 30, 40 plays in a game, he’s going to have to get his weight down to around the 350 range.
