He is going to good for Kentucky both on and off the field, a real team leader.

When Matt Elam won the Paul Hornung Award as the state’s top player, John Hardin coach Chad Lewis said then there was “no way” his star would be considering Kentucky if there had not been a coaching change. Instead, he would have opted early for Alabama.

Instead, the John Hardin defensive tackle picked UK, not Alabama, Thursday and he confirmed what his coach said almost two months ago that he could “not at all” seen himself picking UK if Mark Stoops had not been named coach a year ago.

Of course, Elam knew even Stoops got a bit frustrated when it took him longer than anticipated to announce his college choice.

“He was like, ‘Why didn’t you want to (commit)?’ It wasn’t on like a pushing-type level. He was just like, ‘Why?’ I was like, ‘Coach, I just did not feel comfortable.’ He understand 100 percent. I just liked that — that he understood where I was coming from,” Elam said Thursday.

And what did he do when he finally told Stoops he would sign with UK?

“I’m not really the screaming type. But it was kind of more of being just relieved about everything. It’s finally over, I’m 100-percent committed to that school,” Elam said. “It just felt good, because the whole time I was just struggling to pick a school. It’s hard to turn down Alabama, and it’s crazy that I did, but I feel in my heart that the University of Kentucky … that was the main thing I decided.”

He’s not about to flip before signing day Wednesday even if Alabama coach Nick Saban calls.

“I would tell him that I’m just shutting down my recruitment for good. I’m definitely 100 percent committed to the University of Kentucky,” Elam said.
