Norm, i corrected my post as i mean't it to read head coach of Kentucky. Bear Bryant coached Kentucky in the late 40's-early 50's...

I'm guessing Guy Morriss, who followed Hal Mumme for just one season before he moved on. I think that he had a winning record that year. Just a guess.

Bill, believe it or not but Morris won only 39.1% of his games at Kentucky. (9-14)

Paul, you got it. Joker has won 62 % of his games and no one since 1962 has won 50% of their games coaching Kentucky. I'm sure that percentage will go down once we get to SEC play but very few of our former coachs faired to well in SEC play either. It should be noted that ony 3 times in the last "53" years has a coach had a winning record in the SEC. If you think about those stats it seems a bit premature to even think about a coaching change.

You are correct. The only way to get a winning record is to get a name coach in here, and it might take him 2-3 years before he could start having a winning record.

Not true Bama, Fran Curci, Jerry Claiborne, Bill Curry, Rich Brooks were all big name coachs hired by Kentucky and all left with losing records.

Joker is now 8-7 (.533) as head coach. This winning record at this point is a little misleading because we have yet to play anyone of quality this season.

If, and it's a big if, he can win six games this year he will be under .500 unless he can also win a bowl game.......highly unlikely. No one, especially me, expects to win more than 6; more likely 3-5 wins at best (we might win one SEC game).

At year's end is the time to look at his record, not while he's riding 2 cupcake wins.

I agree with your assessment. IMHO Bill Curry is the only coach we have had since Bear left that could reasonably be called a big-name coach and even he was on the hot seat at Alabama with the big time Bama boosters even though he had done a good job for them.......mainly because he was not a Bama guy.

There are two paths to success for UK considering the severe recruiting handicaps we work under. One is to hire a truly big name coach (top 5 in the country) whose name will draw better recruits to UK and/or (2) hire a coach who plays a system that is more attractive to the better skill position players so that more of them choose to come to UK (Mike Leach and his spread offense for example). The 11 coaches we have had since Bear left (except Hal Mumme) tried to play conventional smash-mouth football against the cream of the SEC and none of them succeeded. Today's pro-set offense will not succeed either because you need pro quality players to run a pro-set offense and we do not have enough of them.

Joker will never have the name recognition and respect needed to draw the four and five star recruits we need unless he wins a lot more games than it looks as if he will win, to the point that his name recognition is good enough to be a recruiting aid, or he starts to run a type of spread offense that is attractive to the more skilled wideouts, running backs, and quarterbacks.

If he does not do either, he will end up being our 12th coaching casualty in another year or two.

Just MHO.

That was an excellent question Bruce - deep in the recess of my mind I recalled something about bear in Md so just a guess on my part!
