We are lucky to have him as he knows football.
Brooks said goodbye last January, turning over the reins to Joker Phillips, Ortmayer stayed put as special teams coach.
"Joker has paid his dues and is getting his chance," Ortmayer said. "I'd like to help him and to be a part of that."
But for Ortmayer, there is much more to it than that. It is a love for the game at its highest level, which includes 25 NFL seasons and two Super Bowl championships with the Raiders, that refuses to fade.
"The thing I probably liked the best about pro football is that you get a chance to coach the best players," Ortmayer said. "The SEC gives you the opportunity to coach the best players in college football. Think about it. If you can win this SEC East, you've got a chance to win a national championship. Four years in a row the national champion has come out of this league. That's unbelievable.
"The best players play in the SEC. It's the closest thing to the NFL in college football," Ortmayer said. "The guys you play against week to week here are the same guys who are going to be playing on Sunday. That's an attraction for our players. It's an attraction for me as a coach."
