It will be fun watching him progress.
Jordan Aumiller knows he has a shot at playing this season, but he also knows he still has lots of work to do.
The Kentucky redshirt freshman tight end was in Danville Tuesday to speak to campers at the Boyle County Youth Football camp and said if he works hard he feels he can get on the field this season.
“I’ve got a good chance to play next year, I think. The spot’s still open. Nobody’s really secured it,” Aumiller, a former Boyle all-state tight end, said. “Everybody is working hard to get bigger and stronger and learn the offense better to try to get a starting spot or second string spot. There’s not that much pressure or anything. I’m still learning. I’m still young.
Junior Nick Melillo has the top spot right now, but Aumiller said the second and third sports are up for grabs.
“(Ryan) Wallace has been moved to (lineman), so that second and third spot is petty open,” he said. “I’d say Melillo is in the lead because he’s had more experience.”
Aumiller started out at linebacker at UK, but was switched back to tight end during the spring, a position that feels more natural to him.
“I like tight end a lot better. I only played linebacker one year in high school, then was thrown into a Division I linebacker,” he said. “But tight end is definitely my more natural position.”
And having that redshirt season to get used not only to college football, but college as a whole was a benefit.
“It was a lot of help seeing how the coaches are, and adapting to how big and fast everybody is. It’s a whole new world,” he said.
Aumiller said he came out of spring practice feeling good about his future.
