It looks like Cuttcliffe could be the next UT coach..

Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton wants to make a quick hire in his search to replace Lane Kiffin. According to a TV station in North Carolina, the Volunteers have settled on Duke coach David Cutcliffe, who was offensive coordinator under Phillip Fulmer in Knoxville.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reported that Cutcliffe will be hired "barring a last-second snag in negotiations." One issue between the two sides revolves around how many of Cutcliffe's assistants will be joining him in Knoxville with six coaches already on the staff in Knoxville.

Earlier on Thursday, Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp turned down an offer from the Volunteers, according to a story by ESPN. Muschamp is currently the coach-in-waiting with the Longhorns and decided to stay in Austin.

In addition to tutoring Peyton Manning at Tennessee, Cutcliffe was the coach at Mississippi when Eli Manning played for the Rebels.

Junior defensive end Chris Walker was supportive of Cutcliffe, who was offensive coordinator when he first enrolled at Tennessee.

"Sometimes you can bring guys in that really don't understand Tennessee, really don't understand playing in the SEC or coaching in the SEC," Walker said, adding that Kiffin's staff didn't understand Tennessee traditions or fans.

"Hopefully we can get a coach in that understands that, which will help us out."

Here is a later article confirming UT's intention on hiring Cuttcliffe.

Duke University head football coach David Cutcliffe is assembling a coaching staff in anticipation of becoming the head coach at the University of Tennessee, a source close to the negotiations told the News Sentinel late Thursday.

When asked about Cutcliffe, UT athletic director Mike Hamilton said via text message that the university was still in the interviewing phase of the process and that no offer had been made to anyone.

Although Cutcliffe is assembling a staff, the deal has not been finalized. An agreement could be reached as early as today, but Cutcliffe, 55, has let loyalty to his assistants affect his career decisions in the past.

Cutcliffe, who has a career record of 53-44 in eight seasons, was fired by Ole Miss in 2004 after he refused to replace some of the coaches on his staff.

They hired him more out of need then "want". See Barnhart/Gillispie in 2007. I feel with the departure of the Tennessee staff and this new hire their program has taken a step backwards. If Coach Pgilips is able to continue growing the Kentucky program with better recruits, we will cath up with them in the not to distant future.
In fact, we should have beaten them two or three time during the last four-five years.

Bluecat Cutlffe isn't the coach yet. Wouldn't you think if they had wanted him they would have confirmed it by now?

I still say that even though we haven't heard much about Petrino but he just might be the next coach of Tennessee. Like him or not the guy can recruit and he has had done it in the Tennessee and the surrounding area when he was at Louisville.

Here is confirmaion of Trey's post.

Cutcliffe, a former offensive coordinator with the Vols, had talks with Tennessee on Thursday to potentially replace Lane Kiffin, who bolted the program on Tuesday to become USC coach.

"After much thought and consideration, Karen and I reached the decision that Duke is the place for our family," Cutcliffe said in a statement released through the university, adding "we have the best coaching staff in the country, and are convinced that we will continue to build a successful football program that both the Duke and Durham communities will be proud of."

All speculation yesterday was Cutcliffe was the man. glad he turned them down to stay at Duke. a caller on wvlk last night said Cutcliffe has had heart trouble for a few years a would not have been there very long had he taken the job. I hope they do not get a big name coach, wonder if Mike Leach would go?, have heard Patrino rumored as well. We do not need him there.

Petrino scares the heck out of me. The only thing that he has working aganist him is his loyalty questions and hopefully UT will shy away from him because of it. You just can't trust a coach like that.
