Fast-break points from the quarterback quandary:
21. Morgan Newton. If it were my call, there is no way I throw a true freshman quarterback who hasn't played a down of college football into a starting role in a road game at Auburn.
20. Will Fidler. That would make the little-used, fourth-year junior from Henderson County the starter by default Saturday.
19. The ultimate, post-Mike Hartline quarterback outcome: If Fidler plays well at Auburn, he keeps the job another week. If he struggles, you give Newton his shot as starter at the beginning of the three-game home stand of Louisiana-Monroe, Mississippi State and Eastern Kentucky.
18. Rich Brooks on leaving Randall Cobb at wide receiver: "(With Cobb at QB last year) our pass offense was pretty much non-existent. To try to utilize his abilities, you have to run kind of a Wildcat (formation) the whole game. Once you do that, you get a little bit more one-dimensional and it is a little easier to defend than as a thing you throw at people every once in a while."
17. Rich Brooks on leaving Randall Cobb at wide receiver II: "He now understands, I think, that his future is not as a quarterback if he wants to make it to the next level. He's got an absolute legitimate chance to be an outstanding receiver and return man at the next level."
16. The Cobb decision: Kentucky's total offense in the four games Cobb started at QB last season — 274, 331, 241, 193. The UK record in those four games: 1-3.
Keeping him at wideout is the right move.
15. Taylor Wyndham on being on ESPN more than Brett Favre since the Tim Tebow hit: "It is a little weird. It was a big play and everything, but kind of now it's gotten overplayed. ... They've played it over and over and over."
14. The ex-files: Hal Mumme. The former Kentucky coach recently snapped a 17-game losing streak for his new school, McMurry University. In his first year as head man at the Abilene, Texas, school, Mumme's squad is 2-4.
13. The two-point conversion try: I think Joker Phillips is a good play-caller, but I wish he'd stayed with the hot hand on the possible game-tying, two-point try against South Carolina and put the ball in Cobb's hands from the Wildcat formation.
12. Ricky Lumpkin on Taylor Wyndham's constant ESPN presence: "We give him a real hard time. 'You see yourself again? You see yourself again?' ... I'm pretty sure Tim Tebow and Taylor are tired of hearing about it and seeing it."
11. Ranking Taylor Wyndham big plays: The redshirt freshman's hustling play at South Carolina where he came from well behind the action to strip the ball from a scrambling Stephen Garcia was a more impressive play than the sack of Tebow.
10. The ex-files: Guy Morriss. The former Kentucky coach lost his first four games as the new coach of Texas A&M-Commerce but has since won two of his last three to stand at 2-5.
9. Jim Brown's streak. The UK football super fan, 90, missed his first home game (Alabama) after attending 412 in a row. To put that in perspective, the last time (Nov. 25, 1944) Brown missed a Kentucky contest in Lexington, Franklin D. Roosevelt was the U.S. President and A.D. Kirwan (two coaches before Bear Bryant) was the UK head football coach.
8. Rich Brooks on Corey Peters: "One of the most underrated players we've had on the defensive line for a long time. ... He's a lunch-pail player who is very intelligent and makes very few mistakes. He has explosion. He has good hands. And he is very rarely off his feet."
7. The Kentucky offensive line. Is playing really well.
6. Keenan Burton. The ex-Cat caught five passes for 42 yards for the St. Louis Rams in their Sunday loss to Minnesota.
5. The ex-files: Danny Hope. The former Eastern Kentucky coach has lost five games in a row in his first year at Purdue — including defeats by two, three, six and seven points. The Boilermakers are 1-5.
4. Ryan Mallett's passing line against Alabama: The Arkansas QB — who leads the SEC in passing yards (284.4) per game — was 12-for-35 for 160 yards with one interception and one touchdown pass against the Tide.
3. Jevan Snead's passing line against Alabama: The Mississippi QB — one of the more hyped quarterbacks in the country in the pre-season — was 11-for-34 for 140 yards with four interceptions and no touchdown passes against the Tide.
2. Mike Hartline's passing line against Alabama: The now-injured Kentucky QB — who came under withering fan criticism locally for his performance against Nick Saban's defense — was 17-for-31 for 168 yards with three interceptions and one touchdown pass against the Tide.
1. The absence of Mike Hartline. I fear people are going to get a pretty vivid picture in the coming weeks of why Hartline has been — and deserved to be — the Kentucky starter.
