Sure didn't take long for this true freshman to takeover the go to guy spot..

The first time Dicky Lyons saw Randall Cobb play last summer, he knew the Wildcats had a special player.

"I went to coach Joker (Phillips) and told him this kid was going to play," Lyons said.

When Phillips, UK's offensive coordinator, asked Lyons how Cobb threw the ball, Lyons was stunned.

"I didn't even know he was a quarterback. I was just talking about him at receiver," Lyons said Monday.

"I told coach Joker he could just run routes and get open. He understood coverages. He knew how to attack and when to stop. He knew how to get past people. He's just a football player."

Cobb has played some at quarterback this year for the Wildcats, but he made his two biggest plays at receiver when he caught two fourth-quarter touchdown passes from Mike Hartline last week to rally UK to a 21-20 victory over Arkansas.

That performance earned Cobb Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week honors. For the game, Cobb caught five passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns, returned three punts for 24 yards, and was 2-for-3 passing for 45 yards.

"Randall is mature well beyond his years," Kentucky coach Rich Brooks said. "He knows even if he is not the primary receiver to see how the defense reacts. Most guys run off in fog and blankness if they know the ball is not coming to him. He has a purpose for everything he does.

"I don't think you find many freshmen that have the maturity, dedication and leadership at that age like he does. A lot of them learn it and usually get it their junior and senior years. For a freshman to come in and be that savvy and mature is not usual."
