Well, well, well. Our boys came out and played a whale of a game on both sides of the ball. I didn't see the game, nor hear it live, so my comments are prime for correction, but here is my take on the box score:

While dangerous to extrapolate from a win over an OVC school, our defense looks like it was vastly improved over last year's squad. Holding a highly-regarded offense to 202 yards is far, far better that what we are used to seeing. And 5 tackles for a loss means our guys were getting into the backfield (and into the opponents heads) regularly.

Offensively, we have a ton of options, all of 'em good. Lyons, Burton and Tamme make it impossible to double-team any of our receivers (not to mention Little and Dixon out of the backfield as additional receiving options). Little, Dixon and Smith give us a LOT of speed and quickness coming out of the backfield. Little averaged over 11 yards a carry, and the team netted over 6 yards per rushing attempt. Clearly, the offensive line played adequately for that to happen. And Woodson, well, he simply has it under control.

Special teams, especially the kicking game, looked weak. I would hate to be those guys during this week's practices!

The offense could use a little polish in some areas, especially route running. Not that they were bad, they just didn't look as crisp as they could have.

I was pleased that the defense was able to keep contain most of the game. The zone defense needs a little polish as well, mainly on the corners, there were a few instances when they got a little lazy but I'm sure that will be addressed in practice this week. That being said, pass defense looked much better, there was a decent pass rush, I would like to firm out the D-line a little more but overall the Cats looked much improved from this time a year ago.

We returned a lot and I felt it showed. Depth in the trenches may be better than I had realized. I also was impressed with how Woodson spread it around. We need to focus on Kent and then week by week. We need another TE and our 2 JC o-linemen need to step up. Really liked Smith as a special teams player as well. Got to be healthy by the 3rd game. I like our guys and think they'll compete with everyone/anyone.

Kent State has a better team than Eastern and it will be a better test. We looked real good against Eastern but they were no Appalachain State. [Wink]

I thought our 3 running backs were awesome and we are as deep as anyone in the country in that department.
