A former University of Kentucky assistant football coach at the center of the program's NCAA sanctions is appealing a federal judge's decision to dismiss a lawsuit against the university's athletic association and two sports associations.
Claude Bassett sued the UK Athletics Association, the Southeastern Conference and the NCAA in 2004, alleging antitrust violations, fraud, civil conspiracy and tortious interference of future contracts. He asked for $50 million in damages.
Bassett, a former recruiting coordinator, resigned in November 2000 after UK officials confronted him about improper recruitment of football players. In 2002, the NCAA punished the football program, which cost the university one bowl game and 19 scholarships.
In May 2005, U.S. District Judge Joseph Hood dismissed much of the lawsuit but let Bassett proceed on two claims: one claim of fraud against the UK Athletics Association and a second claim against the NCAA.
Hood dismissed the claim against the UK Athletics Association in April. The last part of the lawsuit was dismissed in May.
Bassett filed papers this week in U.S. District Court in Lexington appealing those decisions to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Bassett is pursuing those claims without an attorney, according to court documents.
