I drive a 204 Toyota Tundra. About 4 years ago my check engine light came on. The scan said it was catalytic convertor. I figured no big deal. When winter came my gas mileage dropped to 14 mpg (I always got over 17 mpg since I bought the truck). In the summer it went back to normal. I assumed it was “winter gas”. Next winter, same thing. But the following summer it never went back to normal – it stayed at 14 MPG. Then over the last year and a half to two years I’ve been averaging around 11-12 mpg. So a few months ago I had both cat convertors and my exhaust system replaced. MPG didn’t change. I bought a new gas cap. No change. I put new spark plugs in it. No change. Last Thursday after golf I stopped and bought a new air filter for $19. MPG is now back to normal. Can you believe that? A simple air filter caused my MPG to drop like that. Over the last winter I was getting 10 MPG. Now all is well.

A dirty air filter is like having the choke partially closed. Consequently, it guzzles gasoline.

And I found out the hard way!

I don't drive my Avalanche because it only gets 14-15 MPG. I've got a '19 Equinox that gets between 34-35 MPG as a daily driver!

Did your Avalanche always get that MPG, or did it use to be much higher?

I think 17-18 was about the best I ever got out of it.

Check the air filter! You might get back to 17-18. [Smile]
