Kentucky picked up a preferred walk-on commitment this morning from CJ Walker, a wide receiver from Bryan Station in Lexington. Hudl lists Walker at 5-foot-11, 175 pounds.
He announced the news on Twitter.

Every team benefits by having quality walkons. How much they contribute, depends on how hard they work and develop. But, it doesn't cost the team schollies and some contribute on special teams and some do become valuable starters down the road.

There is always attrition on every team. Players leave because they realize that they won't get to play. Players leave because of injury. Players get kicked off, because of grades or legal issues. Also,If a team has a walk ons that can be a competent back ups, it can keep a team from burning red shirt players, if injuries pile up. Teams always take a handful of preferred walk ons and occasionally get a scholly down the road if one opens up.
A team never knows if any of them will turn out to be players, but it is a more talented, athletic version of Rudy, where the athletes are just a notch below getting an offer. I believe Drew Barker's favorite receiver in high school walked on at Kentucky and caught some passes last year.
