Hopefully the Cats will see fit to recruit and sign Ulmer.
New Madison Central coach Mark Scenters isn’t ready to proclaim that junior offensive lineman Will Ulmer could be another Larry Warford, but he thinks Ulmer has all the tools to potentially do what Warford did at the University of Kentucky and is now doing in the NFL.
“Will is 6-4 1/2, 290-95 pounds right now,” said Scenters, who was offensive line coach at Madison Central when Warford played there before he went on to earn all-SEC honors at UK. “He was over 300, but he has trimmed down. He has really, really legit size and phenomenal knee bend for a kid his size and age. He just has a lot of natural ability.
“He is a kid that will hold 315 or 320 pounds at the next level. By the time he is 20 or 21 years old, he will be very impressive with that knee bend and the footwork he already has stands out to college coaches. Like a lot of kids, he’s a little behind in his bench press, but he set a school record on the power clean and he’s a hard worker.
“He certainly has all the tools. He’s a hard worker in the classroom, too. He is a solid student, with a GPA (grade-point average) in the mid 3’s. He already has a qualifying score on the ACT and is taking honors courses and advance placement courses. It’s a great thing for college coaches when you get that combination of academics and have no worries and can just worry about the football side.”
Ulmer does not have a scholarship offer from Kentucky, but Scenters says the UK staff likes what they have seen of him. Western Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky are pursuing him and Louisville has also been in to check on him.
