My Dad was a policeman for many years when I was young (1940's and 50's). He was a remarkable athlete and developed many black friends when he was young because of his athletic ability. On several occasions, some of his friends would borrow money from him after they grew up. It was usually just a few dollars for groceries. He would leave Mom a note such as "****** Bill or ****** Joe borrowed $10." He did not know their full name. Using the "n" word was not meant to be derogatory.
