By now, you’ve read about former Cat Chris Matthews’ Super Bowl breakout performance. After never having a single reception in the league, the Seahawks wide receiver had four last night for 109 yards and a touchdown.
Matthews went undrafted in 2011 and after a short stint on the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad, played a year in the arena football league in Iowa and another year in the Canadian football league. This time last year, he was working at a Foot Locker until he got an invitation to try out for the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad. Had the Seahawks won last night, Matthews probably would have been MVP.
While most of the football world hurried to do their research on Matthews during the game last night, one person wasn’t surprised by his meteoric rise: Randall Cobb. Cobb took to social media to show his support for his former teammate this afternoon:
“It’s funny to hear how everyone is asking who Chris Matthews is. My guy has been doing the same thing since we were at UK 5 years ago. We used to talk about what it would be like to live out our dreams and play in the NFL. I always told him that all he needed was a chance. He got his chance on the biggest stage in the game! After being cut by the Browns, being named Rookie of the year in the CFL, and being out of football and working at a shoe store… Chris NEVER gave up on his dream. I couldn’t be more happy for him. Now that they know the name, don’t let them forget it!! #DBAFollowing”
In a time when the program really needed it, Matthews’ performance was the best Super Bowl commercial Kentucky never asked for.

Matthews is the one that made the big play against Green Bay. He came down with the ball on the onside kick.

The best thing that ever happened to Cobb was to play with Aaron Rodgers.
