Moving to NASCAR
The rumor has been going around for a few weeks now but I am still kind of surprised that he actually left IRL and open-wheel racing.

Two thoughts: 1. Do you think he is moving because of the close call he had recently where he could have been killed? Seems to me it would be safer to be on the NASCAR circuit.
2. Ashley is a NASCAR fan and told him to change.

Shouldn't the title of this thread be "Mr. Ashley Judd signs with Chip Ganassi?" ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

Nah, race car drivers do not think about things like that. They can't afford to.
I think he honestly wants the challenge. After seeing Montoya doing decent all season and with Hornish Jr. possibly making the jump in the very near future just gives him more incentive to follow and exceed what they are doing.
And, of course, having Juan Pablo Montoya as your team mate probably has it's own props too.

I would think that there is more money in NASCAR, especially for a guy who seems to have a very outgoing personality.

BCM, I am not sure about the money. I would think just on base salary alone, IRL and Formula 1 would pay more but NASCAR teams tend to pay their drivers a lot more in the way of incentives.
Regarless of that, I think the move is better for NASCAR than it is for Mr. Judd. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif) [ 10-04-2007, 11:59 AM: Message edited by: LouisvilleCat ]

It seems like NASCAR would be more lucrative from the point of endorsements and TV contracts.
BTW, I know nothing about Ganassi. Is he Italian? Does he know that Franchitti is Scottish?

Yeah, I think NASCAR is more lucrative in that aspect. Also, the biggest thing with NASCAR is the level of competition. In F1 and IRL you only have 5 to 8 teams that can win any given week. In NASCAR there are 38 of 43 teams that can win any given week.
You know, I am not certain if Ganassi is Italian or not but I think he is. And yes, he does know that Franchitti is Scottish. Most drivers in F1 or IRL are European.
A little history on Chip Ganassi. He has owned (and I think still does) several open-wheel race teams, including IRL and F1. He has ties with a lot of the open-wheel drivers in several divisions because of this. A few years ago he formed a partnership with Felix Sabates to start a NASCAR team known as Ganassi Motorsports with Felix Sabates. They hired Nascar veteran driver Sterling Marlin to help get the newly formed team running.
As time went on Marlin was released and replaced with Jaimie McMurray who went on to win at Lowes Motor Speedway in Charlotte, NC. They later released McMurray and hired Juan Montoya as well as a couple of young and up coming drivers.
