Cats Face the Commodores in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tourney. Vandy won last night over LSU by 9 to get an opportunity for a rubber match with the Cats!

The Senior Night loss to Vandy can be attributed to one thing - Reeves couldn't make a shot. If he could've just shot 40% we would have won that game. I think we'll be okay tonight if we just make a decent percentage of shots.

Tshiewbe is playing strangely passively. He is not getting his normal great position for offensive boards. He isn't pinning his man and calling for the ball.
Time for the other players to step up. But, yeah, CJ needs to sit. He is too injured to play the kind of defense this game requires. Maybe Tshiewbe needs to spend more time on the bench too. Pull the old guard-inversion and post up Wallace, Reeves, or Thiero and get back into this game.

I don't know if Cal will pull Oscar to go small and match up. I think he should, and like you said, post up Livingston and Wallace. It wasn't that long ago that Cal did that so I would think he hasn't forgot that it works. But I think he'll freeze up and play 5-6 guys and have no real adjustments. If it comes down to coaching I think Vandy has the advantage.

Toppin doesn't need to start looking for the 3. Almost half his shots are from the 3 pt line. He's been shooting well lately, but I hope he doesn't start to think of himself as a 3 pt shooter. That could be bad.

Livingston just isn't tournament ready. He has faded as the season progressed. Not sure why, but his offensive productivity has slide off the charts. He is still a monster rebounder, and needs to be on the floor, but our offense will have to come from the other positions.

Our offense has looked out of sorts. Movement isn't very good, and alot of standing again. Maybe Reeves can get hot again and we get him some open looks.

Part of it is that Vandy is playing great defense, but part of it is poor execution on our part. Get the ball inside, and crash the offensive glass. We should dominate inside.
On defense, we have to stop the dribble penetration and get out on the shooters on the arc. Maybe a matchup zone is in order.

This was a terrible game all the way around, but Cal just does (or does not) do some things that amaze me. Especially for a guy that is supposed to be worth 9 million dollars. And whoever just said it, maybe shoot some FT's in practice.

Reeves had 22 points and fouled out, Toppin had 21 points and 11 rebounds, Oscar had 19 points 15 rebounds, Livingston had 4 points 7 rebounds and Wallace had 7 points and 4 rebounds

They made 18-20 90% free throws to our 11-20 (55%), I wish Cal would realize how important free throw shooting is and do something about it.
They were 10-25 (40%) on 3 pointers and we were 6-25 (24%)

Cal's Memphis team lost a National Championship because they couldn't make free throws. If he hasn't learned by now, which he hasn't, then he'll never learn. But keep recruiting 'athletes' (instead of basketball players) based on high school rankings. It has worked for him financially.

It’s a sad state of affairs when you have to face the reality that Vanderbilt (yes, Vanderbilt) is better than UK. Cal, please throw in the towel. You’re making our Cats become an also-ran team.

I didn't see the game last night I read the Stats. Did Cal ever play a zone ? They made 10 3's game over. Not counting FT.

Vandy played much, much better, and much, much harder, and much, much smarter than we did.
Kudos to them. They are firing on all cylinders. Really like their coach.
But, man, does this team have some glaring issues. Defensively, in particular, we have NEVER been able to handle quick, penetrating guards, and Tshiebwe is a liability anytime he has to make a decision on defense. Zone, anyone?
And poor free throw shooting is inexcusable. That is merely a matter of practice. Either the coaches don't care to ask them to practice, or our players don't take the time. But Free Throws have cost us many games over Cal's tenure.
Offensively, we executed poorly. Combine poor execution with a rather predictable scheme, and you get what you saw. Our starters and Livingston played and racked up some stats, but every point seemed to require too much effort, while Vandy's points came easily, from the flow of the offense.
No chance at number nine this year. Now we get to watch the end-of-season drama, and play "Who goes to the NBA?".

I agree, free throws were a big factor in this game, both our inability at the line and their’s to convert. I know Oscar missed the front end of a one and one twice and I’m pretty sure at least one other did as well. I don’t agree free throw shooting is just a matter of practice. Practicing helps but nerves also play a big part in shooting them well. Some don’t have that particular skill no matter how much they practice even if they have nerves of steel. I can’t imagine Cal is so stupid he does not put in enough time practicing free throws.
It didn’t help to have a one legged point guard, a back up point that couldn’t play and the third choice inexperienced and inept at the point position. Add to that the C J injury that has made him ineffective and you have real problems in your backcourt.
Had to edit this to say one other thing about practicing free throws. Teams are only allowed so much practice time. Do we really want players practicing free throws at team practices when time is limited when they can, and should, practice them outside team practices on their own?

Handy I have to disagree with u a little on this one. My hs head coach who is in his mid 50's now can hit 20-20 now and 97 of 100 anytime with any practice. Its all muscle memory. He did play college basketball in indiana and he says his team always was in the gym shooting ff either before or after practice every day. heck he can make them with his eyes shut/.
My boyhood friend who when to MMI in millersburg then to transy before Vietnam never misses a ff. It is all about practice and muscle memory.
I suppose nerves plays a part but our guys r supposed to be the best of the best and nerves is a copout - go practice boys!!
