I feel like one of two things happened:

-I feel like Cal through out the weave last night. OR

-Cal has put a heavy emphasis on spacing for this team and It finally showed up.

Obviously both of these could have happened because of the pace of the game but I wanted to get the basketball brains of TCD to weigh in on this because of our conversation in regards to "4 point line article."

Look forward to hearing from everyone. Great game and a much needed win for us all. Merry Christmas!

Spacing was still not great -- we usually had Reid and PJ in or near the paint. But our bigs did a great job of passing out of the paint, which resulted in some wide-open looks from the arc. That was new.

Also evident was Cal's insistence that the outlet pass end up in the PGs hands further down the court. Our tempo on the breaks was furious.

But, the weave (thankfully) was gone, and we had some vastly improved passing both inside-out and around the arc to shift the defense and create open areas.

Another nice wrinkle was Ashton (especially) and Tyler both were aggressive driving the ball, keeping the defense on its heels (pun intended). Add in the nifty inside two-man game between PJ and Reid, and it all just worked.

So, no, I didn't seem much of a shift to emphasize spacing, or initiating the play deeper out in the backcourt (a la the 4-point line). But I did see a much better execution of Cal's inside-out offense.

I didn't see a difference in the spacing. What I did see was no dribble qeave, thank the Lord, and I saw passing. Our offense wasn't just a bunch of guys looking to go one on one. If someone was open we passed the ball. We didnt hold and wait to see If an individual could get a shot, and if not then pass. We just kept the ball moving and as a result got alot of good shots

Nice breakdown Tip.

I was so ecstatic to see us ditch the weave.

You are right about the inside out game. I did not think about it until you posted. Also I think the fact that Reid and PJ stepped out to take and make a couple 3s, opened up some of those penetration lanes that Hagans and Hero took advantage of.

Cal did admit we took more 3s than he would have liked but that's what happens when you play UNC. I for one loved it.

I big stat that I have not seen and would be interested in reading is the run outs. UNC usually dominates runout buckets off misses. I feel like UK dominated this category. Your point about Cal emphasizing the PGs catching their outlet pass further out more than likely helped this.

I agree ukman! TIp's point about the bigs passing out of the post was huge too. All our perimeter guys benifited from this.

I think we would all be smitten to see the weave disappear. hahaha

Biggest factor imo was one word DEFENSE especially on the run outs after NC won a Defensive rebound! Hasn't happened all yr...

North Carolina are used to controlling the boards and getting fast break points on run outs. We took that totally away from them. The defense played by Hagans was about as good as I have seen from a UK guard since Wayne Turner and Rondo many years ago. I credit their rebounding and defense for that beautiful win against the Tar Heels.

All I know is I loved the pace of the game. We need to play up tempo all the time. I think our starters enjoyed playing at that speed also. Hope we keep it up.
