Kentucky shot just 63 percent from the foul line against Illinois State Monday and has consistently had problems at the line except for Tyler Ulis and Jamal Murray.
In the first half alone, UK missed 10 foul shots.
“We’re still trying to figure that out. At some point this year, we will be a great free-throw team, and I can confidently say that," junior Marcus Lee said.
Why?
"Most players are bad free-throw shooters and they’ll just accept it. That’s not something our team does," Lee said. "Like, we’ll miss a free throw and you’ll just see our team get pissed and that’s how we are. So I don’t doubt we’ll be a great free-throw team at some point.”

I hope Lee is right, it will cost us games as the season goes on if we keep shooting free throws and three point shots at our present percentage.

I like his confidence and it's a good start to improving shooting.

Ray, you are right on as we are shooting only 66.5% from the free throw line compared to our opponents 72.4%. That is completely unacceptable considering we are shooting 49% from the field which includes a shoddy 27% from the 3 point line.

If they don't do it on their own it won't happen. Practice time is too valuable to give much FF time.
Even at my H.S. level - we have good shooters but bad FF shooters - our guys must shoot on their own but rarely do.

Ed is so right, you don't need an opponent to play against to become a good free throw shooter. That is the one part of the game you can do completely on your own, just keep shooting them until you find your comfort zone and stay in that zone.

So true. I've told this story on here before, but I'm going to brag again:
Several years ago, two of my boys and a classmate, who was on the high school team, were playing 21 on our backyard goal, and invited me to play. They gave the ball to "the old man" first, because they either respected, or had no worries about me beating them. The friend tossed the ball inbounds to me, and proceeded to retreat to the basket for a rebound. One of My boys told him that he should guard me, but he didn't, and I hit the shot. As you know, after a made basket in the game of 21, the shooter shoots free throws until he misses. I did not miss. Hit 19 in a row to skunk all three of them. They wanted to play another game, but I refused and went in the house! To this day, I know when to quit!

Norm, you missed your calling. Shooting like that you would have been a star on your high school team.

Isn't Lee the worst free throw shooter on the team?

Lee's percentage is 35% from the free throw line. Briscoe isn't much better at 39%.

Lee and Briscoe are our lowest free throw shooting percentage players. Both shoot under 40 percent.

You the man Norm! They're just lucky you didn't take it to the hole and dunk over them.

Norm once you have the technique down you will always be a great ff shooter. Good job - bet u can still knock them down!
Another example of a learned shooter is the head coach here at my h.s.
He is a former player on a small college in Ind and even now he can walk on the floor(without warming up i might add) and shoot 95-100 and i have personally watched him make 50 in a row on more than one occasion . he is still young by my age as he is 46 but has been out of college for almost 25 yrs.
Practice does makes perfect and our guys (ky players) don't seem to want to put the extra time in to be good. Heck they live 50 yards from the gym - no excuse in my view!!

It's their career they're hurting. They need to make free throws in the pros just like in college.

Briscoe is a freshman and Lee is a Junior, I think.....that leads me to believe that Briscoe has a chance to improve and that Lee is hopeless...and they might have to put his butt on the bench, if it comes down to free throws in a tight game.

I guess when you don't get to play a lot in your first two years you don't practice free throws either.

I would think you would practice more, especially if you want to get more playing time.
