The first time Kentucky coach John Calipari had a team play play in an event with UCLA was when he was coaching at Massachusetts and his team was invited to the Wooden Classic in Anaheim, Calif., in 1994. Kansas beat UMass and UCLA beat Kentucky in the other game.

“Who doesn’t belong in that bunch?” joked Calipari after Monday’s win over Illinois State.

The No. 1 Wildcats will play at UCLA Thursday night in historic Pauley Pavilion and Calipari certainly now coaches a team that belongs among the nation’s elite teams even if this is just a regular-season game against the Bruins.

Calipari recalled again Monday how legendary UCLA coach John Wooden told him once that he was playing too many players, and Calipari said Wooden was right.

“He said, but I understand why you do it, recruiting and transfers and all the other things you got to do. But understand that the way you’re going to build your best team is play less people,” Calipari recalled.

But very few teams have the caliber players that goes so deep. Thus it's hard to keep those guys on the bench just to play a few guys.

Your right Bama and it helps recruiting knowing you will get a fair shake to get playing time at Kentucky.

I've always been a believer that you don't need more than a rotation of 7 players. Coach K has been pretty damn good at doing it with 7 over the last 30 years.

Murray-Skal-Ulis-Briscoe-Poy-Lee and Matthews are our top 7 and the rest pretty much get garbage minutes. Cal has done a very good job monitoring playing time and the players have responded well.
