This was Oscar Combs brother.

If you haven’t heard yet, Kentucky sports legend Ira Combs passed away earlier today after suffering a heart attack outside the Yum Center. Ira was on his way to pick up his credential for today’s games, and the news sent shockwaves through the local sports community.

UK athletic director Mitch Barnhart just issued the following statement about IRa’s passing:

“All of us at UK Athletics are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ira Combs. Ira, a fixture at UK Athletics events for decades, loved this state and its people as much as anyone. Ira’s dedication and hard work in covering high school and collegiate sports in Kentucky were obvious, but his kindness towards the people he came into contact with and worked with will be what we will remember him for the most. Our prayers and thoughts are with Ira and the Combs family.”

John Calipari just tweeted this as well:

Here is what Barnhart had to say about Ira Combs.

A statement from Kentucky Director of Athletics Mitch Barnhart on Ira Combs, who passed away near the Yum Center on Thursday:

“All of us at UK Athletics are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ira Combs. Ira, a fixture at UK Athletics events for decades, loved this state and its people as much as anyone. Ira’s dedication and hard work in covering high school and collegiate sports in Kentucky were obvious, but his kindness towards the people he came into contact with and worked with will be what we will remember him for the most. Our prayers and thoughts are with Ira and the Combs family.”

It seems like everyone that knew Ira only had good things to say about him. He must have been a special friend and person.

MH WE WENT TO DILCE COMBS HIGH SCHOOL IN JEFF KY, ABOUT 6 MILES OUT OF HAZARD, IRAS DAD WAS POST MASTER IN JEFF, AND PASTOR OF THE CHURCH, THEY RAN A LITTLE RESTAURANT LIKE ON HAPPY DAYS FOR THE KIDS WHEN SCHOOL WAS OUT, IT WAS CALLED LITTLE CHARLOTTE, AFTER IRA'S SISTER WHO DIED. OSCAR WENT TO SAME SCHOOL AS WE DID, IRA'S DAD NORMAN COMBS AND MOM KATHERINE WERE WONDERFUL PEOPLE, ME AND IRA PLAYED BABE RUTH BASEBALL TOGETHER TOO. IRA LOVED THEM MOUNTAINS AND MOUNTAIN KIDS. IRA WILL BE GRATEFULLY MISSED IN THAT AREA.

Thanks for sharing that, GB. I'm sure if Ira was anything like Oscar, he was an awesome fellow!
