I think the list is decent but not in the order I would pick for the first 5. Who would be your top 5?

Over at ESPN Insider, Goodman polled two-thirds of Division 1 college basketball coaches on who they thought was the Best X’s and O’s coaches in the game. He ranked the top 25 based on their results, and included a quote about each coach from one of their colleagues. Where did Cal end up? In a tie for 16th with Boston College’s Steve Donahue and Gonzaga’s Mark Few.

1. Tom Izzo
3. Rick Pitino
4. Bill Self
7. Coach K
8. Billy Donovan
10. Kevin Stallings
T14. Tom Crean

My top 5 List

1. Bo Ryan
2. Tom Izzo
3. Bill Self
4. Fred Hoiberg
5. Kevin Stallings

Really? I think he is near the top. He has some very nice designed plays and he now switches defenses on a regular basis. If he would have played any zone against Arizona back in 1997 UK would have walked away with Back to Back to Back titles.

Wife's Mad. Told me we never talk anymore. And just last nite while watching super bowl told her 2 or 3 times to get me a coke and popcorn. Also told her not to forget to take out trash in the morning. Ain't that something. Also told me I was too indecisive. Can't figure out what to do about that. One nice thing I guess. She called me a pro crastinator. Don't know what a crastinator is but I guess I'm a good one for her to call me a pro. Gonna wait til tomorrow to look that up though. I love her but somrtimes can't help but thinking I should have told uncle Junior to keep his coon hound pup and stevens double barrel and also his youngest daughter.

Hard to separate the guys at the top. Izzo/Pitino/Cal/Self/Donovan all design great offensive and defensive sets and strategies.

Bo Ryan is a mastermind because he runs the Swing Offense that no one else runs and they do it very effectively. Buzz Williams is another great X and O coach as well.

Ok, get ready to let me have it.

In my opinion, if you give Tubby some serious weapons, he'll make every other coach look mediocre. He had about four McDonald's AA's during his entire tenure at UK. If he could recruit like Cal, he'd have at least five National Championships by now.

Stallings and Crean in the top-15? I'd take just about any coach over these two. Crean's record speaks for itself - terrible. Really, what has he ever done other than ride Dwayne Wade's final weeks of his college career when he played out of this universe? Nothing. Wade's last two weeks of his career made Crean as successful as he is today. But Crean is really just garbage. And Stallings - I just don't see it and I never will. Outside of his futuristic arena, he's nothing. He can beat great teams at home, but that's all he has.

Actually, another coach that I think is outstanding is Oliver Purnell. I don't know why he hasn't gone on to a really high-profile job. It's almost like he doesn't want to go to a major program.

It is that game along with the Duke game in 92 that keeps me from rating Pitino at the top of the coaching ladder. A good coach would have won both of those mentioned games. Pitino today is a much improved coach over his UK days but to me he still has two major coaching losses that keeps me from putting him at the top of the coaching profession.

I don't see Crean and Stallings among the top 25 coaches in the Nation either. Take Stallings out of the Vandy gym and he is rather easy to beat.

Paul, couldn't agree with you more. Tubby could do some magic and while at Kentucky he won a lot of big games with his x's and o's. The come from behind against Duke in the elite 8 was a masterpiece. I guess that's why he was named coach of the year 3 times in his 10 year stay at Kentucky.

If Tubby could recruit as well as he coached he'd have hung 2 more banners. Don't get me wrong, Tubby brought in some good recruits they were just scattered out too much.
