LEXINGTON, Ky. – Bullitt East’s Derek Willis, a University of Kentucky signee, said he was honored to receive the KABC Sixth Region Player of the Year award on Friday at the Boys’ Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena. He was wearing a UK pullover as he excepted his trophy on the floor where he’ll play his college ball next season. UK coach John Calipari, who was at the Sweet 16 to scout Madison Central’s Dominique Hawkins, passed by Willis in the hall and grabbed his armed and said, “Congratulations, kid!” Willis, who is also a Mr. Basketball finalist after leading Bullitt East to the regional semifinals, discussed with the media UK’s recruiting class, his predictions on the Cats’ remaining targets and his own plans for the future.
