I think the important part is who finishes the close games not the starters.

Kentucky doesn’t have a traditional upperclassmen who will be a legitimate rotation player. But that’s fine. Kentucky coach John Calipari said Wright State senior transfer Julius Mays will fill that void. Mays played one season at Wright State (14.1ppg, 2.5 apg and 42.4 percent on 3s) after transferring from NC State. Calipari attended a Monday workout of the Wildcats and remarked about Mays’ shooting and overall experience. He also was extremely pleased with NC State transfer guard Ryan Harrow. But Calipari said Harrow and Mays could be coming off the bench. He said he fully expects at least two freshmen -- guard Archie Goodwin and forward Alex Poythress -- to start. The question is does he start both freshmen centers -- Nerlens Noel and/or Willie Cauley -- if he wants to go big? I would be stunned if Noel isn’t in the starting lineup. The question will be Cauley. Kyle Wiltjer, Mays and Harrow will be in the rotation and likely at times starters during the long season.

Here is my "guess" on the starters at the beginning of the year.

Noel-Center
Cauley-PF
Poythress-SF
Goodwin-SG
Harrow-PG

Line up i'd like to see.

Noel-Center
Poythress-PF
Goodwin-SF
Mays SG
Harrow-PG

I think Wiltjer starts as one forward and Cauley-Stein comes off the bench. Lots of intechangeable parts with this team. Will be a fun year.

I think Wiltjer will staart the exhibition games but if he doesn't show well and Cauley does there will be a switch.

I look for Mays to spell both Harrow and Goodwin at the start. Wiltjer will spell both Cauley and Poythress. Cauley and Wiltjer can either spell Noel.

Beckham, Hood and Polson will get PT according to what they show in their time on the floor and possible foul trouble. With freshmen you never know how their fouls will go.

If you take what EnterpriseCat and Bama Cat said, add them together I agree. [Big Grin]

Thing about Coach Cal is he is not afraid to put ANYBODY as the 6th man and go with his best 5 every time..

The kids understand that and that is why it works..

COMPETITION Babeeeeeee

If you have seen any of the "goonies" videos on YouTube with Wiltjer and Cauley Stein......

Kyle Wiltjer has taken the lead on bringing the new kids to the block..

Here's Kyle and Cauley-Stein impersonating the Turtle Man.....

LIVE ACTION!

Last year it was the "WBA", now the Goonies. Kyle Wiltjer is a hoot!

As to starting lineups, I would think we may see a more traditional eight- or even a nine-man rotation this year, instead of Cal's usual 5+2. By the mid-point of the SEC schedule, I expect Cal to settle into:

Big men: We only really have three true 4/5 players, Noel, Cauley_Stein, and Wiltjer. I expect to see all three get significant minutes.

Wings/shooting guards: Look for Poythress to dominate minutes at the '3', and maybe even play some at the '4' if Cal wants to go 'small'. Hood Beckham and Goodwin can spell him (even Wiltjer could play the '3' if Cal goes "giant" and plays Noel, Cauley-Stein, AND Wiltjer [Eek!] ) Goodwin will start and get most of the minutes at the '2', but Mayes, Beckham and maybe Hood can get important minutes at that spot.

Point: Harrow, with some help from Beckham, Polson, Mayes, Goodwin. We seen to have a bevy of 'combo' guards, giving Cal lots of interchangeable parts.

Imagine the length on the floor if Cal goes 'Giant':

Noel 6-10 Center
Cauley-Stein 7-0 PF
Wiltjer 6-9 SF
Goodwin 6-5 SG
Beckham 6-5 PG

[Eek!]

Or, if he goes for the more athletic team:

Noel
Cauley-Stein
Poythress
Goodwin
Harrow

The 'long rifles' of three-point specialists:

Noel
Wiltjer
Hood
Goodwin
Harrow

Ah, the possibilities!
