Forty years ago this would have been their assignment: Play a 22-game freshman schedule. Practice and scrimmage against the varsity players (without being allowed to beat them). Prepare for three complete seasons of varsity basketball, a four-year commitment in total. The last group of recruits who came to UK before freshmen were eligible were nicknamed “The Super Kittens.” They won all 22 games by an average of 33 points. They stayed three more seasons, winning parts of two Southeastern Conference titles and making one trip to the Final Four. Today in Rupp Arena, for the first time since when they were the national runner-up to UCLA in 1975, they’ll all be together. Kevin Grevey, Jimmy Dan Conner, Mike Flynn, Bob Guyette, G.J. I remember that team just like it was yesterday. They were special and went on to be a large part of the runner up team that lost to John Wooten in his last game as UCLA coach. They actually should have won a National Championship in their senior year but since Wooten had announced his retirement and the game was being played in California, we got hosed real well by the officiating crew, they were not about to let the Wizard of Westwood end his career in coaching with a loss.

I remember that game too swsc, I watched it from the hospital, where I was a patient.
